Another Pflueger Summit Question
Another Pflueger Summit Question
I picked up a Pflueger Summit at an auction, and was hoping to find something out about it. I've found several listings on Ebay for the 1993L, and posts about this model number of reel, but the one I have doesn't say anything about a model #. It also doesn't have a grease/oil point. The marking on the reel says "Pflueger Summit" then the next line says "Trade Mark". It has several patent numbers on the inside, the last one being 1,691,622:73.047:PATS PENDING. I think that means the last patent was given in 1929 or 1930, but I know that doesn't mean that they didn't continue to produce the item under that number for many years later. Do I have a newer/older model? Do I have a reproduction? It's really a beautiful reel in nice shape, as far as I can tell. I'm just starting to want to trade and collect fishing items, and can really use any help I can get! Thanks! (I'll try to get a picture up later, if that would help)
Starting collecting
Hi Greg-- Several suggestions; 1. Join the Old Reel Collectors Club
(ORCA) 2. Purchase a book called " Price Guide for Old Fishing Reels"
published by Stu Lawson in California about $25.00 but worth it. 3. Enjoy.
If your really into this type of collecting, you will truly enjoy being a
member of this great bunch of guys. We have annual meetins that have
been all over the country. Our excellent 6 times a year publication is
well written, even you can author an article. It is very informative and
covers a multitude of interesting items. Recommend you join. Member

Thanks for your suggestions! I'll look into all of them. Is the price guide detailed enough so a rookie can tell differences between an old reel and a much newer version of the same reel? It's neat to find something to collect that you can get some old beautiful items for such a good price Here's a picture that I'm attempting to upload. I'm having trouble getting the thing to focus and flash with enough detail to show the stamping on the reel. I'll need to start posting in a photography forum to figure out how to photograph shiny objects!

Nice reel!
The amber handle knobs go along with the lack of model number and make it a nice early Summit. Even earlier models also lacked the spare pawl and the (tension-adjusting?) dial. The fewer the gizmos on the faceplate, the earlier the Summit.
There was a great article on the subject that appeared in the Reel News a few years back. You may be able to order a copy.

Thanks for the info! I'm glad I got lucky and stumbled on an older one! I found that issue you mentioned with the Summit article in the ORCA store and ordered one. It will be interesting to better pinpoint the date of manufacture. Right now I'm making a very uneducated guess of 1930 to 1935. I also picked up a collectors book for lures and tackle, reels are not as strong in it, but it shows some nice pictures, and has values listed. I couldn't find the Lawson book, it appears to be out of print, I might pick up a used one on Amazon or Ebay. I was told that there was a gentleman named White in Jenks, OK., that has quite a shop setup for reels and books. I'm temporarily in Oklahoma City, so I may visit there in the next week or so.
My little collection sits right now at 4 reels. A HI Utica automatic fly reel in the box, the Summit, a 1972 Shakespeare Classic, and 1765 Shakespeare Wonderflyte. A modest start, but a start nonetheless! Reels really seem to be affordably priced compared to other collectables, as long as I don't get stupid with auction bidding!
Thanks to both of you for the help and please if anyone can enlighten me more, I would much appreciate it!
