Clearly, you shouldn't have teased Al so much about this climate change thing...a foot of rain in a few hours? I hope you and yours are living high on a hill down there!

Just got off the phone with Bob Miller. He is fine -- can't say the same about the city. Many of you know that Bob is a geologist who specialized in rivers (and flooding). Well, he keeps a rain gauge and measured 17.8 inches of rain in just 48 hours. Parts of the city are completely under water, and a couple perished down the road from him when they could not get out of a grocery store parking lot.

Fortunately, Bob's house has no damage. I wish the same could be said for many other Nashvillians. Bob says it is a 500 year flood.

Thanks for checking on us! Minor problems for us at our house (on a hill) but misery for thousands of others. Parts of our area have never in history been flooded before, so those folks felt no need for flood insurance. Many now have a total loss. City water supply now in danger of going under. Water level is supposed to drop today, so it might be ok. Again, thanks for your thoughtfulness!

Bob:

Good to hear that you are alive and well. It wasn't so long ago that parts of the southeast were having drought conditions, and folks were praying for rain. Sometimes it seems that there can be too much of a good thing.

Rest assured, you and all of the good folks in the southeast are in our thoughts and prayers. Here it is May 3rd, and last night Mt. Abernathy, elevation 2000', which is just south of town, got a fresh coat of snow! Spring is sure springing lots of wet stuff on us.

Take care Bob

Got a call yesterday from two friends in my neighborhood with serious landslide problems. Went to check them out. Wow! Bad scene. The house of one has major foundation failure. Ordinary hard rains produce these type slope failues in our steep-sided hill areas here, but I suspect this time there are a lot of them. My little hill is stable, fortunately. The occupant is another matter.
