Baseball Nonsense

Post by RAM »

Mentioned this once, but it is one of those things that inquiring minds concern themselves with (preposition out-of-place notwithstanding). To date no one has offered an explanation:

When a batter swings at a pitched ball and misses it completely, or worse still just watches it go by through an imaginary zone over the plate, it is called a strike. How is possible to not hit something or not even try to hit it and strike it at the same time?
If you hit the pitched ball, no matter how hard you hit it or how far it goes, if it does not stay within two lines painted on the field it is not called a hit. But it is not called a strike either, even though you did strike it. Or, if you prefer, hit it.
Idle minds want to know!
