If you look closely at my Avatar image (feet of course), you'll notice that contrary to it appearing that I am running around barefoot on the lava, I'm really wearing "flip-flops" or "go-aheads" or as we like to call them: "slippas". The footwear came over with my ancestors but theirs had little stilts on the bottom (funny, with all this rain, that seems like a good idea now). I don't think I'll be bringing them to Lake George tho because as much as we like to wear them here (outside of the work environment), when in Lake George, do as the Lake Georgians. Besides, although I like them becuase they have tire tread-like soles perfect for rock hopping, their styling is a bit... dated (or should that be "vintage", "vintage 1965"?).Steve wrote:Not to change the subject, but when I first saw those noisy flip-flops, in California about 45 years ago, they were called "go-aheads," since you had to move forward to keep them on...

The weather in May here is always a challenge. Could be 70 1 day 50 the next. The AVERAGE for this time of year is in the upper 60's. You do get days like today. NICE WARM 70 degrees and sunny. Remember to take another look at the photograph. You'll notice Lake George Villiage is on the southern end, hence the cooler Canadia n air heading south. Still beats staying home cleaning out the gutters... Maybe Steve and Henry will put a good word in for the weather god.

Brian,
I think if you look close he is tucking a few in the drifts to gain "patina" till the spring thaw... then after spring thaw he comes back and has an "Easter Egg Hunt" of sorts to retrieve the reels, relocate them to the shrubbery in Houston for that final round of oxidation... We just need to figure out where this is to get there and find the reels first before Joe can get back to them. Geez I hope it isn't Lake George!
Flip flop pfact: I plan to wear "flip-flops" today as they say we will be hitting 92F on 4/3...

I think that is trick photography! I see no house slippers, fireplace nor a bottle of scotch. There is no way that Joe is going to leave the confines of the den to stand in a place like that. He wouldn't even stand out there if you told him that buried in the snow bank was a hard rubber, handmade, Shakespeare reel.

Ah, Springtime!!!!!
I thought you'd all like to see some of what's in store next month. Since it was such a gorgeous day today in Upstate NY, I took advantage and drove up to see Henry to go over plans for the show. I found him stocking up on goodies:

After buying a few things (I can't go in there w/o buying a new toy!) from Henry, I drove to the Sagamore hotel, where anyone interested in the Friday tour and High Tea will enjoy this view looking south on the lake:

A short drive later, I was in the Village of Lake George, where anyone interested in wearing a bikini can strut their stuff on the Million Dollar Beach. That white building looking thing on the left is really one of the the steamships:

As you can see from the beach picture, it's a short walk to the steamships, where we'll enjoy lunch on the largest of the three ships there. This one, the Minnie Ha Ha, is the smallest of the fleet:

Turning 180 degrees from where I stood to take the boat picture, we see the lake side entrance to the Fort William Henry resort:

If the weather is not conducive to bikinis, we can chat about reels and sip brandy next to the fire in the resorts main sitting area:

And, the view from beyond that fireside area ain't so bad, as you can see:

Finally, the convention center where we'll set up for the show.

While I can't say what the weather will bring, I can say that everything is casual, so dress however you feel comfortable. Even if it's a cool afternoon on the cruise, the bar is always warm and fully enclosed!
Can't wait to see everyone!

Wonderful virtual tour... looks like you have everything under control. Also glad to see there are no snow drifts in any of the photos nor icebergs floating on the lake...
The only extra photo I am sure some would have loved to see would have been you "test landing" some nice lunker...
Really, looks beautiful...

Jim,
Thanks for the tour. I can't believe it's only one month away and I can't wait too!
For those that may have missed Jim's last post in the National Update thread over on the announcements forum, please see:

Updates!!!!
Well, it’s been a great day traveling to various fishing stores and tackle shops, handing out flyers and talking reels with lots of interested people! Since we’re just a few weeks away, I thought I’d let you all know what Henry and I have been up to.
For starters, please be sure to get those registrations in if you want a table. We’re very very close to selling out - only 3-4 tables left. These are 8 foot by 30" tables, and they will have skirts to hide bins, etc. Display tables will be on the outside walls, and will have power outlets.
Henry and I will be featured on “Outdoors with Tim Blodgett”, a local radio show devoted to hunting and fishing in the region on Saturday the 13th. I’ve also been interviewed for an article in the Glens Falls paper, and Henry has been interviewed for articles in all the Warren county papers.
Henry and I met with the resort staff again yesterday - and we’ll have our ORCA hospitality room a few steps from the main desk. Henry and I are putting info packages together with maps to lots of places, such as the American Fly Fishing Museum, Lake Lonely, local shops, antique shops, diners, you name it.
We checked out the hall, and there is a ramp to load stuff from the front. It’s a very well lit hall too, with a smaller room for table overflow.
The schedule as posted on the ORCA convention link is still correct, but I thought I’d expand on that a bit. Our trip to the Museum will be a car pool type event, with Henry and I providing as well as transportation in our own vehicles. The drive to the Manchester area is beautiful, and the staff at the museum has planned a little BBQ action for us in the afternoon. That afternoon, once we’re back, Bill Peters will be on hand for a casting seminar, with targets set up on the lawn for practice all week. You’re on your own for dinner that night. Thursday morning the resort is opening the breakfast buffet early for us, then it’s off to Lake Lonely for an action packed morning of fishing (*the cutoff date for reels/rods is 1950, no spincast reels or mono line, please). I stopped by the lake today, and it looks great! Seminars by our own Steve Vernon follow at 4 pm and then by Mr. Herbert Henze on the history of Penn reels. Following the seminars, it’s time for our annual members dinner. The cost is 25.00 per person (meal tickets can be purchased at the ORCA registration room) and will be buffet style. What are you getting for that you ask? Here’s the menu!
One Hour Of Hors d’oeuvres
Assortment of cheeses and specialty Crackers;
Fresh Vegetables and Dip; Tossed Bruschetta;
Shrimp Thai Money Bags; Swedish Meatballs
Salad:
Mixed greens with Ripe Tomatoes and
Sliced Red Onion served with House Dressing
Entrees:
Chef Attended Carving Station Featuring your choice of:
Oven Roasted Turkey Breast
Oven Baked Ham
Carved Prime Rib of Beef (add 3.50)
Broiled Salmon
A Fresh Filet, Broiled with Lemon Juice
Smothered in a Creamy Dill Sauce
Vodka Penne
Penne pasta served in a rich vodka sauce
Chicken Marsala
Tender Breast of Chicken sauteed with Mushrooms
in a Marsala Wine Sauce
All Entrees are served with oven Roasted Red Potatoes, Seasonal
Vegetables and Freshly Baked Rolls and Butter
Dessert
(Select one)
Apple Strudel
Cheesecake
Carrot Cake
Chocolate Layer Cake
And, if you can move after all that, there will be more room trading into the night. Friday morning the breakfast buffet opens early for the Breakfast with the Board at 6 am (cost 11.50 per person) then it’s out to the town dock (weather permitting) to cast to floating targets as we all try to become the next Antique Tackle Casting Champ. Lunch will follow aboard a Lake George Steamship (Henry is working on the cost per person info for me - I’ll post as soon as I have it), then more seminars with ORCA’s own Ben Wright talking spinning reels, and Jim Brown talking American Fly reels. You’re on your own for dinner, then it’s early show set up from 7pm to 9:30pm.
Saturdays show will be from 7am for members, 9am for the public to 2pm. Awards will be handed out for best display, the casting tournament winners and fishing tournament winner.
For the folks not interested in seminars, casting contests or tournaments, we’ll have the Lake George tour with local historian Bill Gates on Thursday morning, ending with high tea at the Sagamore resort. Transportation will be provided, with takeoff and return location the Fort William Henry resort. As a special bonus, Lisa Russell, Mary Kay specialist will be offering free make-overs on Friday for the ORCA ladies at the resort. If you are interested in having a make-over, please e-mail me at to make plans.
Henry’s wife Kate has done a great job with the 2006 ORCA Tee Shirts, and ifg you haven’t seen the official patch, it features a John Kopf reel.
The weather has been great for this area so far, and Henry and I have an order in for more that week. For those of you coming from warm weather sections of the country, I’d pack a sweatshirt or two, just for the cool breeze off the water in the mornings.
Wow, all that typing built up my appetite, and the pizza I ordered just arrived.
As always, please let Henry () or I () know if we can help in any way.
I’m sure I’ll have more info as the week goes on too.
