2006 National Convention

Post by Jeff Johnson »

I want to go to the ORCA 2006 Convention in New York this May. Will somebody fill me in on what I can expect. Ive never been to a show of any kind yet.
I can only go for a day or two , which days would be best.
( I want to go so I can meet a few fellow collectors and hopefully come home with a few old reels to add to my collection.)
Do I need to register? Im not getting a table or staying at the hotel. Money is a little tight right now and I will probally just sleep in our mini van to save money. Any info from someone who has been would greatly be appreciated  Thanks, Jeff

Hi Jeff,
Glad to hear you'll make the 2006 National Event! Since this is the first ORCA event for you, I'd really recommend having a look at the reports from past events
http://orcaonline.org/Conventions.htm
Check out the report Brian, Richard and Harvey wrote up from the 2005 event in Texas. Tom and Jay, along with the rest of the Texas crew, did a fantastic job. Henry and I hope to come close to the great things they did with the show.
If you can only make one of the 4 days of planned events, I'd shoot for Saturday for several reasons. The first has to be the displays. Our members do a great job with displays, and are very happy to talk about them with anyone willing to listen and learn! You'll meet lots and lots of members too. If you're looking to add a reel or two, let us know by posting here - you never know, a member might put one aside for you!
If you can make it for a couple of days, you really can't beat room trading. Lots of great deals have been found while room hopping as early as the Tuesday before the show!
If you have questions, fell free to shoot either Henry or I an e-mail, and we'll do our best to help you out.
Henry can be reachedat
I can be reachedat
See you in a few weeks!

The first day (for room trading) and the last day (show) would be good choices  Oh... for consecutive days... I guess the show day and the day before... IF you have to keep it down to two days...
Bring cash, reels for trade, leave plenty of room in the minivan for reels to go home in... Business cards with your contact info. might be a good add on (make some on your computer) so when you meet folks... Bring something to calm yourself down when you see all the great reels in one place at the same time... Be ready for some of the friendliest folks you can imagine. Everyone will be willing to talk, share and will treat you with respect no matter how much or how little you may know about reels. Come like a sponge— there will be so much information to absorb you will max out. Cover as much ground as you can in the time you are giving yourself... it is an experience not to be missed. I am sure the "NY Guys" will be putting on a great show...

My suggestion would be to come down on Friday, as early as you can. Then sleep in the van overnight, and stay until the show closes on Saturday. You'll be home by afternoon on Saturday, and get to see all the good stuff and partake in or watch some of the fun on Friday.

Brian,

I think "Yee Haw" and "ya'll" were only right for the LAST national... Henry and Jim will have to provide a "lingo guide" for upstate NY... I don't know that they "cotton" to southern talk up there... I think you will want to try "You guys" rather than "ya'll" for starters...

Pretty close, el, but here's the only lingo y'all'll need in New York:

"Youse guys" (pronounced "Yoo skies")
"Whatcha askin'?"
"Yee Haw, that's some sales tax!"
"How far is the next New York Stuckway exit?"

Shirr, but that's not just local lingo. It's acceptable in any bar/saloon/tavern/pub/taproom/ginmill in the country and draws the same responses everywhere. In fact, it's even becoming popular in Kindergartens in three states as a universal response to teachers.

So Steve...

Weather report. Some folks have to start packing early... what is the dress code (or are you still in coats and mittens up there?) What sort of toggs will we need for fishing? Windjacket, raincoat, parkas, swimsuits?

I am guessing most all the events are casual, unless the cruise calls for something more... or less as the case may be.

Will the weather be spring like with possible rain and chilly nights (brandy by the fireplace) or flat out summer weather... 80 degrees day and night (like Texas), balmy breeze, sandal weather... We might have to wrap Harvey up against the cold if it isn't shorts and flip flops (shoes) weather yet...

Yes, weather report will be important as time draws nearer. Flip flops are out of the question. I Don't wear them. Sandles and Merrell's are in style. Jacket or sweater can be rounded up. The only parka I want to hear about is when some one ask, 'Where do ya wanta me to parka the car?".W ill be there maybe Tuesday with or without bells on. That will depend on airline security.

The TV "meteorologists" up north can't even predict snowfall while it's occurring, so predicting weather six weeks ahead is quite a challenge. But in this case, budget constraints make it highly likely that weather will be cancelled after April 30, unless Albany acts quickly.

Not to change the subject, but when I first saw those noisy flip-flops, in California about 45 years ago, they were called "go-aheads," since you had to move forward to keep them on. Ever since, I've been disappointed that folks have adopted the "flip-flop" term for them, 'cause it's better used as a generic label for all political hacks (and TV meteorologists).

Thanks Steve, Just let us know if a Nor-Easter is coming or maybe a South-Westerner like John E.
As for 'Flip-Flops", We in SoFla may be the ones responsible for changing the name. Twenty five years ago they were called ‘Thongs”. As man moved up the ---- Sapien chain of evolution and started to walk more upright, we discovered other parts of the body covered with more interestering items that we started to call “Thongs” From then on, “Flip Flop” became the name given to the sound being made of the Geezers heading to the early Bird Specials.

Harvey, don't confuse those shoes with the thought processes going on while the Geezers try to decide which direction those Early Bird Specials are in.

In the higherarchy of media slime I think TV weatherman rank lower than political hacks. My dog can predict weather better... when you open the door he can tell if it is raining.

So am I to take it the bikini is out and a jacket is in? Strappy sandals-no, gloves-yes, sundress-no, sweaters-yes...

Sounds like Harvey isn't bringing anything called a flip flop or a thong to wear so we can all rest easy... I will be trying to recover from that mental image all day.

So can we narrow down the weather a bit? Can we have the odds on snow? Or freezing temps? Typical daytime temps in the ? 40s and 50s or 60s and 70s? Usually rainy and windy in—is this what you consider your spring?

If I come without a parka can I buy one there that will fit?

el, I gotta confess that I live over 300 miles south of Lake George, so Jim and Henry can give you (and me) a better idea of what May is like up there.

Harvey and I agree that bikinis are always in, although jackets are optional in case of sub-zero temperatures. The local Eskimos can supply baby sealskin parkas, if necessary. I managed to find this, maybe the best guess so far on what to expect. We assume that our hosts have arranged to have their 4.5" of rain on the weekend after the convention.
http://countrystudies.us/united-states/ ... george.htm

And here's a pic of the area from Google Earth. The green areas are fecund and warm by May, while the gray-brown areas are muddy under a perpetual haze of sleet.

Also ran across this while surfing. Hope the bratty preteens stay home.

Thanks Steve. As I glanced at the weather chart, July and Aug. seem like winter to me. As for me living up there in the winter, they don't distill enough Brandy. And "El", I promise I won't wear a thong, even if they are standard fare down here for French canadian snowbirds. I guess I better be getting my one pair of Levi's out of the pawn shoppe and start knitting me a sweater.

I'll keep my observations about french Canadian women to myself...

But in the subject of weather I did some digging and found this:http://www.lakegeorgervpark.com/Weather/Index.cfm

Looks like MAY is the big month for rain there so... Raincoats and boots-yes.
Warmest temp upper 60s so Bikini-not likely
Damp and brisk sounds like the order of the day... but not parka and muckluk weather (thank goodness). Sounds like Harvey is about right on the mark with jeans and sweater...
Ill be wearing gloves but I still wear them here some days and we have already hit the 90 degree mark more than once this spring (only to dip back to freezing the next day though).

I imagine your weather there in May is much like ours is here now...

Jack, O Seeker of Truth and a 40-yd Perfect: That was a good'un!

el, note that the RV site cut the rainfall average posted on the other site. No conflict of interest there, huh? But the weather will be fine, and you'll end up with tan lines at the edge of the gloves.
