I've got a pole from the 1960s, made out of PVC pipe for the handle, with a slit most of the way down one side. It has a big spring inside. A fiberglass rod with a cup on the end of it slides inside the pipe, with a cocking handle, that slips into a notch. Has a reel seat on the side of the pipe. Will get a photo and show it. It was made by a company. It will toss a sinker a pretty good distance, but heaven help you if you forget to release the line on the reel, it will pop the sinker off and shoot it like a slingshot.
I've also seen a bow and arrow type arrangement for shooting bait. The bow becomes the rod, and the arrow the bobber.
There also was a pistol that was for shooting a bait out, for hand line fishing.
I own a catapult that came from Australia, was used for saltwater hand line fishing.
