Casting problem with Coxe 25C

One of my model 25s in near mint cond. just won't cast without backlashing unless the drag is screwed so tight that casts are limited to about 35'. I've repeatedly cleaned & examined every part, tried it lightly oiled to heavily greased, varied the endplay, without improvement. The pawl seems to be perfect & travels smoothly, & the free-spool works perfectly. It's probably a factory lemon, but is there anything left to check?
