Payne fly rod model #?

Post by reelland »

Any of you fellow reel collectors know anything about Payne fly rods. Bought one today but with wrong tube and bag I think. It is in great shape except one tip is broke, darn it. But, rod is not marked with any model number. It is marked with the plain later "Payne" stamp and "Reg. US Pat. Off." and "Sold by Von Lengrerke & Antoime, Chicago" on butt. It is a 7' 2/2 pc rod, brown wraps, gold tippet, flame tempered finish with blue/black oxidixed reel seat and ferrule hardware, walnut seat. Is this a model 98, 1950-60s era? :?: Thanks, Bill Land.

Payne rod

Lucky sonofagun!
I doubt that it could come from the 1950-60 era - I'm pretty sure VL&A were out of business by then. My bet would be the '30s, in which case it would almost have to be a model 98 (97s were later). Try Clark's Forum for a really solid ID. That's
