Unusual little clamp reel FS

Post by Richard Lodge »

Trying to clear out some of my reels and things. This little silent clamp reel is unlike any I've seen. It looks similar to what Pflueger made eons ago, but has no markings and no click. The odd thing is the spring ring clamp is oriented 90 degrees to what you'd normally see for a reel to be clamped onto a rod. Not sure why or what or who, but it's neat and very small. Maybe it was made or adapted for ice fishing? Your guess is as good as mine. This reel is $35 plus $7 Priority Mail shipping in the US. thanks for looking!

Richard, I think that if you'd flattened that clamp back horizontal, you'd find you have a Montague RP single action reel.

Hey

Just because it clamps on to the rod sideways is no reason to question the intent of the original angler who made the modification.

My theory is that it was modified as a wedding ring to make sure the "I do" clearly included tolerance for reel collecting . . .

John, I will admit Phil pointed out the obvious to me. And, with my newfound knowledge, I took a ball peen hammer to all of my clamp reels, pounded the clamp rings out flat to see if they were just regular flat-footed reels with the ends of the feet curled up.

I like Len's wedding ring theory. It would ensure the bride knew the importance of fishing AND it the ring/reel could serve as a backup if ever the married couple found themselves in a boat without a fishing reel. A variation on up the creek without a paddle, as it were.

Excuse me while I take the hammer to a few more reels...
