Pelican 100
Pelican 100
I came by a Pelican 100 reel stamped made in Italy. I can find no reference to this reel anywhere? It is on a Bristol #39 metal rod with a wooden handle. Can anybody give me any information on this combo? Thanks Mike in Oregon.

Made by Zangi, early to mid 1950's. Depending on which one you have and the condition - may value as much as $75 to $225 - according to Ben . . .

Len is referring to this book by Ben Wright:
Wright, Ben The Wright Price Guide for the Reel Man. Update to the Third Edition, Volume 1 - 2006.
This book includes historical information and prices of many reels not included in the 3rd Edition. Most prices have also been updated. A Limited Edition of 500 copies. Soft Cover.
And it's available in the ORCA Store (see the link at top of this page)

Hi Brian,
me thinks Len is refering to my new book Wright's Spinning reel reference and value guide first edition 2011.
the reels valued @ 75.00 would have a matte black (gray) finish the ones valued @ 225.00 would have a bronze/brown finish or a dapple gray finish.

It has the bronze finish and works great. Caught a couple of trout on it last week in the Mckinzie. Thanks for the information.

Re: Pelican 100
I know I am posting to an old string, but I stumbled on one of these and it is very cool. The bail seems like a stubborn piece even after a good cleaning. Otherwise cool once I got the 60 year old caked and baked grease out. I also have the brownish grey version. It's now the coolest spin reel I own. Now, I want to get a later Orvis 100 to see the differences.

Explain what's going on & post a couple of photos. Maybe I/we can give you a couple of pointers toward a remedy. There's kind of a special order & check procedure when you put the bail back together after those parts have been cleaned. You should be able to have it snap back like new.The bail seems like a stubborn piece even after a good cleaning.
