O.R.C.A. Nicknames

Post by Jonathan P. Kring »

My knowledge of reel collecting being limited, when I wake up at 3a.m. in the morning and can't get back to sleep, my mind starts to wander. Ever wonder where some of your O.R.C.A. friends come up with their nicknames? A few notables are, Deke, TEAL, Ram and Bad Bob just to caption a select few. I'm sure there are many more being used. I suspect some are contrived of initials, some are not. Deke finally got the best of my curiosity awhile back. I won't share what I found, but it might be of some interest to fellow members to tell where your nickname was derived. I've been called several things over the years, some unprintable. Usually I was jut referred to as "Hey you" Everybody can tell their own story.

I was a little redhead freckled faced boy, so you can imagine the names I was called, and as I grew older, I also grew taller, 6' 4" at my tallest ! so many of the more so-called hurting names dissipated ! so then I started getting the Too Tall ! names ! then finally, I got the one that stuck, which all my close friends still call me, my whole name is Robert Paul Ellis, and I always went with my middle name Paul, ( I only use Robert for business ! ) I always loved to fish, and always talked fish, so the nick name that stuck, rhymes with Paul, ah ! maybe I better not start something !

I used to be 6'4' at my tallest too. In my old age I've shrunk to 6'3". Added the extra inch plus some to my waist. Guys I used to work with and golf with called me "Big Jon". I used to kind of go for "Honest Jon". Never stuck! Go figure.

Ok. Robt. I am a little slow on the uptake. Now I see where your e-Bay name came from. The Smart part must be the partner you are in cahoots with? Correct?

My real name is Kirk but I have a couple nicknames. When I started working I drove a machine which pulled trucks that dumped into a hopper and took rock up some conveyer belts which spread rock on the roads. The truck drivers started calling me Captain Kirk and called the rock spreader the Enterprise. The name stuck and most of the guys that work for me call me Captain. My other nickname is Catfish because I always liked to fish for catfish on our local lake, even when a group of us would go bass fishing on a river or lake for the weekend I would get down to the water early and fish for catfish and same in the evening and night so they started calling me catfish and than their wives and friends picked it up so now several people call me catfish, or Captain or Kirk.

Bad Bob is the worthless little gunslinger who strode into Langtry Texas, home of Judge Roy Bean- law west of the Pecos- proceded to shoot a horse, instructed the terror-stricken locals to cook him-with onions. A rifle-bearing deputy appeared on a roof top and proceeded to put a bullet into the bad one. When the body was examined, someone exclaimed "He shot in in the back!" When they flipped him over, the guy then said "No he didn't! He shot him in the front AND the back!"

Always felt a kinship to Bad Bob. Expect no less dignity when I'm gone.
Cheers for worthless renegades!

The other Bad Bob
PS: Been to Langtry TX. If I hadn't, I wouldn't have missed much. It don't show on the atlas. Somewhere near Marathon.

Google "Bad Bob". Click The Roy Bean YouTube site. There is the video excerpt from the movie. Shows the whole story. D--- well worth your time to see the demise of one of America's true pioneer heroes. How tragic. Long live Bad Bob!

Just watched. Had to get my 18 yr old Grandson to find it for me. He was one mean ombre, right up to the time he was ventilated. Kind of a nasty wound! Hope you are not that Bad. (There was a little humor in that video clip)

Bad Bob: I think with your last post with the video clip you must have put fear in the hearts of your fellow ORCA friends. No posts since. "Nobody messes with Bad Bob"

Ok...Bad Bob gave me the Deke name...he was a bit taken aback in one of our in-depth discussions to learn that I used to be a deacon in our church...look pious and pass the plates...Dad was Elder Elder...at any rate, I think BB had me pegged as the anti-Christ...so, gave me the moniker.

John,

My favorite John Wayne movie is "The Sons of Katie Elder." Dean Martin was born and raised in Steubenville, Ohio, about a mile from my hometown in WV.

Are you sure it was buck night or one of those nights the driver paid a buck and the rest of you rode in in the trunk?

My dad was a big fan of the Duke, and I saw it at a drive-in also, with my parents and six siblings in my Dad's new 1965 Dodge station wagon. I was 7 years old.

I still want to duplicate Dean Martin's auction and buy-back of his fake glass eye some day. Maybe at the hotel bar at this year's ORCA convention if I can find any takers.

John Had to search the Indiana map to see where Seelyville is. Finally found it. Back in your youth you probably had to hitch the horse and buggy and take The Old National Rd to get to the big city of Indianapolis.

the Big City was Terre Haute in those days for a young lad from Staunton (find THAT one, Jon!).. :D --Sin City...could stand on Courthouse property and hit 4 cathouses with a rock!----and I'm not talking of the feline persuasion... Word on the street was that the mayor gained benefits from those establishments...but then...I digress...
