An Interesting Find

Post by Reel Geezer »

This has nothing to do with fishing reels, but is quite interesting to the Rubber Reel Lady and this Old Geezer. As I might have mentioned on this forum in the past, we have a couple of remote game cameras that we position in different places on our property, depending upon time of year. Last year we had at least six different mule deer bucks pass by our cameras. One was photographed several times.

We named him "4 point Tall", since his antlers were quite tall, as opposed to being a wide set of antlers.

During the winter he passed through our pasture several times each week. On 2/20/12 we got a photo of a buck that had obviously shed his antlers.

About a month ago we found a shed antler in the pasture that after comparing it to all our photos we determined had come from 4 point tall. Yesterday, while mowing the pasture, we found the mate to his shed, and have completed the set. It is rather neat to be able to identify the deer these sheds came from.

Neat, phil! I've been thinking of putting a camera out in our yard, since we have a bobcat cruising around plus coyotes...plus a few undocumented folks on occasion. I also believe we have a mountain lion that does a circuit past our place once in awhile, marking a couple spots. Not as gentile as your visitors!.

I have another camera near my bird feeders and it has produced a lot of interesting photos of my feathered friends. One that I have been wondering about is the Eurasian Collared Dove. This bird is a bit larger than the common mourning dove, and is an invasive species that is spreading rapidly in our area. I first saw them on the Snake River a few years ago. Then they appeared here along the lake two years ago. Now they are quite common here, and are obviously well established. Has anyone else seen these birds in their area? They have an easy to recognize call - once you realize what you're hearing.
