semichrome

Post by Dale Noll »

Can someone tell me what "semichrome" is. where to get, and how to apply. I have several reels with swirls after trying to clean and cannot get polished out with my metal cleaners. Thanks.

you can usually find it in the better grocery or drug stores in the silver polish aisle...it comes in a tube...not cheap, but worth expense. I occasionally see it showing up in antique malls, as well and I understand motorcycle shops have it for polishing chrome. Spelled Simichrome.

just put it on with a paper towel or cloth rag..or toothbrush for hard-to-reach areas. I will also sometimes apply it using one of those green pads like used for dishwashing, if I have a real hard case, but that type of abrasive action is typically not needed and lots on this board would yell about it. doesn't hurt to let it sit for a minute or two, then polish off with an old sweat sock.

simichrome

Dale, the only place I can find it in my area is in the antique malls. Just ask at the desk if any booth has it. Jewelry shops may carry it also. I usually have to pay about $8.00 a tube, but it doen't take much to do any particular job.

Some people don't realize that the product works on painted surfaces also. I used it on a cover plate from a Cardinal #7 spinning reel that had paint smudges and minor scratches, and it took all the paint rubs out and evened out that green surface with its original shine. Jim

where to find simichrome

Post by TravisT »

I get mine from "Van Dykes Restorers". They have a catalog as well as a web site. You get a better deal if you purchase 3 or more tubes, about $6.50 each. I apply it with a thick, fuzzy, 1/2" hobby paintbrush. Works well. Good luck.

Dale,
I am not a 'Cleaner" as I have stated many many times but IF I get into the mood, I use a product called MAAS. A polishing cream. It is fine enough that "swirls" don't appear. I mainly use it on lures because I don't polish all the "stories" off my reels. You can find it at jewelry stores or order it from Maas International, PO Box 128, La Grange Il. 60525-0128.
If I remember right, it is around $6.00 a tube but one tube will last forever. I guarantee you your elbows will wear out before you use a whole tube.

Dale: Simichrome works great on those faded brown hard rubber plates. The rag will turn brown with the old decomposed rubber. It brings back the original luster. A little dab'l do ya! Bob

I prefer the Glo that Milton uses. You can also get it for 3 tubes for $15.00 & change from the same address (includes shipping). It does everything Semichrome does.
