Shakespeare Tournament 1741 box...free
Anyone needing a box for a Shakespeare model 1741 Tournament reel just let me know and I'll send it to ya for whatever it costs to ship. Send me a pic of your reel, and its yours. I'm sure someone out there in ORCA land can use this. And no, its not a train wreck, its really a nice box.
Jim

what's the diff between 1740 and 1741? We talked in another thread about the 1742 and that one has a wider body.

Ah, I thought so from your previous posts...I'll go throw the question on the original thread if I can find it and maybe the Robyns will land and straighten us out
Jim, hope that box finds a good home...I have a notion it's a bit tougher than one might think...most all the reels in this series are like mine and ron's...1740s!

John,
At one time, I had all the 1700 series of Tournament reels, including the 1740 narrow, 1741 wide, 1743 wide and 1744 narrow. I don't think I've ever seen a stamped model 1742 tournament reel.

Jim, here's a 1741 Tournament. It's aluminum, 100 yds. and I just now looked and don't have a box for it--thanks!

Robyn,
I'm glad the box will have a good home. I'll mail it out this weekend.

Re: Shakespeare Tournament 1741 box...free
Many thanks, Jim! I owe you a bunch of Sam Adamses or whatever's your pleasure.
While fumbling with the 1741 & camera last night I got curious about how it came to my collection, at first thinking it was one of the Shakespeares I bought from Stephen Barnes a few years ago when he was liquidating his reels. A little more digging revealed it was a 2006 eBay purchase from ky_reel_trader, the son of former ORCAn Fred Cookenour, who was helping his father sell off reels from a fine collection. I picked up some nice reels from his auctions and got outbid on several others.
This reel is a model 31, aluminum alloy, not freespool, 100 yds., with a cork arbor, identical to the Tournament pictured in the 1925 catalog as a model 23043 other than the stamping on the tailplate. I don't have a 1931 catalog but the 1930 edition shows the 1741 Tournament as a 60 yd. model, so go figure. If the box label says it's for a 60 yd. model, I'm happy to pass it on to to someone with that particular reel. Here's another shot of mine:
