Hi again! Thank's for the tips on cleaning my reels. I tried water and vinager on a heavily salt encrusted Penn and it disolved about 95% of the salt. I'm going to weigh in on the restoring debate and add my 2 cent's worth. I'm a collector of old coins and firearms and i have freinds that collect antique furniture, and they will all tell you that it is okay to give your antiques a good cleaning but do not polish or attempt to change the natural aging process of the item in question or you will negativley affect its value. As for the mechanical parts, original are always best but after market is fine if done professionally. Someone in your organization will have to choose which guide lines to follow. (good luck)
P.S. Where can i find some good referance books on vintage reels. Internet searches have so far come up empty. Thank's for letting me have my say.
Tony: thanks from all of us for clearing up this cleaning issue thing Thank God we can now come to a consensus of opinion on this one.
Re books, you are just in time to join ORCA for the coming year! $25 gets you a great mag every quarter, with lots of valuable info and full of lots of references to books to buy and read plus access to the ORCA library, which is full of reel info! Welcome aboard!
I believe you can get to all the pertinent info via
Jim, thanks for the plug for my Old Reels web site. Tony, I also have a series of booklets available dealing with smaller reel companies. You can see the list on my other web site: http://orcaonline.org/images/pixel.gif?gone. And to the rest of you, there will be two new booklets ready on January 1. They are John A. Cozzone and his reels and Meisselbach & Meisselbach Catucci Fishing Reels (which replaces my Meisselbach price guide). These full color booklets are only $10 each including postage.
