We've had some visitors this week...

Post by Reel Geezer »

After the ice went off the lake out front a bunch of migrants moved in. Thousands of snow geese on their way to parts north decided to come for a visit. The past few days they have flown over our house to land in some corn fields right behind our house. They make nice photo subjects.

There are also a few Great White Fronted Geese mixed in with the flocks of snow geese.

As I was uploading these photos, they all moved back to the lake to rest for the day. The noise is very loud as they fly over. And when in the corn field there is a constant din from their gabbling. They will return in the evening for another search for a meal. In a few days I assume they will resume their journey north.

It was a good thing that the past two days were good for photography. Our neighbor Willy, who farms the field, started plowing yesterday afternoon. The geese came off the lake last night, took a look at his plowing and have moved on to greener pastures.

Fudge watched the geese flying over, but when I went to photograph them I left him in the house. I figured he would make a mass charge into the flocks and scare them off. Between that corn field and our property there is a canal, and the coyotes and deer travel the canal bank, so Fudge seems more interested in checking out which coyotes have traveled overnight, than in who is occupying the corn field. The canal is dry now, but will have water in it in a few weeks, and then it becomes his evening swimming hole.
