Schultz "Fire Island" reel

Post by clinton_beeler »

I was given this reel for christmas and I am given to understand that it's a "branded" Penn. Does anyone know when these were made? It's a very nice reel.

"branded" ??

I'm not sure I understand your question. But I'll take a shot at answering/discussing. I have Penn Catalogs (or copies of same) going back to around 1937. I don't recall Penn ever having a "brand reel" by the name of Schultz or Fire Island.

I think Penn made reels for Schultz, and I assume Schultz called one of these a "Fire Island". I further assume Schultz was a Wholesaler. I can't find them at the moment, but I know I have a couple of Schultz reels that were apparently made by Penn. But again, Penn didn't put its name on the Schultz reels, so far as I know.

What leads you to believe this is a brand name Penn?

Sorry it's taken so long to get back to this, but I got a bit side tracked.

The reel looks like a Penn. It has only one mark on it, a stamping on the handle side where the Penn stamp should be. It says "Schultz, 122 Nassau St., Fire Island, New York.

Strange, but the only reel that really looks like it (that I have) is my Ocean City St. Lucie.

It's about three inches in diameter and the sides are the same dark maroon color as a couple of my Penns. There are no markings on the foot or anywhere else save the one I have mentioned. I have assumed that it was a Penn but we all know about assumptions. Any help would be appreciated.

I believe that if we could have seen the whole box of Penn "Plugs" shown in the last issue of The Reel News, you would have found a Schultz Fire Island. Most of the plugs on the right side of the photo are for Schultz reels. I think it is a safe guess that your reel was made by Penn... "if it looks like a Penn and clicks like a Penn, it's probably a Penn"

Clinton,

It might be helpful if you could post a picture of the reel. Maybe we could then correlate it to a standard Penn model.

Wow! That's a lot older than I thought. Did the one you saw have black sides or the dark maroon like mine?

Schultz

According to Herb Henze, Penn did indeed make reels for Schultz, as well as several other companies. At one time Schultz had stores in both Freeport, NY (here on Lawn Guyland) and Manhattan.
