HA :!: :!:
It's snowed some flurries yesterday around Omaha . Hopefully it will warm up a little one of these days before the season is over or July gets here . The walleye spawn is in a holding pattern and the darn turkeys even think it's too cold to breed. :loco:

My wife found a few little white morels in the neighbors yard and left them to grow. The guy who cuts the neighbors grass decided to mow yesterday. She hasn't gone back to see the damage yet. Lots of rain today should get the black morels poppin'. I can't wait for a plate of fresh fish, mushrooms and fried taters...just doesn't get any better than that!

No mushrooms here on the high plains. However, we have lots of asparagus in our pasture. It was just emerging when we had 25 degrees Sunday night, then 24 degrees Monday night. That put off our asparagus picking for a week or more.

This is one from last year. It happened to be the first one that my Son had ever found. It will be awhile before we find any Mushrooms or asparagus this year.

I don't think i have any memories in outdoor sports that tops a couple morel finds i had when growing up in Indiana...the memory of coming over a hill and seeing one...then two,three,four...and finally just sitting down and starting to count them, hoping that someone wouldn't come along and want to share the patch. I had a few moments like that when the count cleared two hundred 'srooms!...nervana! I loved eating them coated in flour then fried in butter...but the findin' was still the part i remember with the most joy!

When living in Northern California for most of my life, mushrooming was automatic 21 days after the first good inch of rain, Oct.-Nov. some good years, some bad, the same with steelhead fishing starting in Nov. up thru Feb. as long as the River didn't flood that year! and then there was pig hunting!
Darn I hated working! :bash:

Don't have a camera but we've been finding gobs for over a week now. Still a few grays but mostly yellows now. I caught a bunch of Crappie over the weekend had a big feed at the shop Monday. Crappie fillets and mushrooms! Crappie are just starting to stage before the spawn, eggs are still hard, I'm guessing another week to 2 weeks before they come to the banks.

LOL I doubt if the state of California would go for that! Went to Lake Taho last month and the Dept. of Ag. stopped me at the state line everytime I came back from Reno, asking if I had any produce from IL.

Some people are nuts :loco: , or just plain lazy  Believe it or not there are roadside stands setup around here selling them for upwards of $35 a pound  I love them little suckers but not quite that much love. First of all, once I find them I sure as heck ain't going to sell any, or tell where I found 'em. That would be as bad as giving the location of your favorite fishing hole.

John, if I sent some they'd put me behind bars for trafficking the wrong type of 'shrooms

Several years ago, the going rate in NYC was $100 a pound! I'm guessing it's more now, like everything else. I'm sure $35 sounds cheap to a lot of chefs!

has anybody tried making Morel oil? I know truffle oil is absolutely wonderful.
Soak them in sunflower oil (best) or olive oil for a few weeks, save the oil, and cook/eat the mushrooms.

John are you certain morel mushrooms aren't known in California to cause cancer? Everything else is. I recently bought some metal caps for the valve stems for my car. They were stamped with that.

Hey John, back in the day in Indiana before the days of pesticides, did you ever dig dandelion greens along the railroad tracks out in the country? That is only a fleeting memory now. I think it was a good memory. It might have been because we were so poor it was anecessity? Jon

Well, i hope not, Don...i found a bunch a few years ago right at thanksgiving time! They came in on redwood bark from up in the mountains...i spent a lot of time buyin redwood bark and trying to get those 'rooms to fruit on demand, but never did manage it!

Jon, the dandelions are edible, as i recall, but never had them! It's funny ow that sort of thing is a tradition in some families and not in others...don't think it had much to do with poor in southern indiana...we were all poor!
