Hi Folks,
First time here and I hope someone can give me info on the H.I. rod I just acquired though a garage cleanout. Same as the subject title and has a tip eye that is 360 at the end instead of on one side. The blank shape is octogon instead of round. Anyone know about these?
Thanks,
Bill

I can't tell you specifically about the Chesapeake, but I have a couple of H-I boat rods (split cane, hexagonal). If you've got a centered tip, you should also have a double guide in the middle of the rod (a ring on each side of the blank). The purpose of the two-sided rod is to allow you to fish either side to straighten out a fishing set.
Longer rods (7-1/2'+) with a ferrule in the center are usually casting (surf or bay) rods. These frequently (usually) have a problem with cracking in the ferrules.
Shorter rods (5-6') with the large ferrule into the handle are usually boat rods.
Depending on condition, these rods will sell from $25 to $65+ on ebay.
You date them by the H-I trademark decal, as follows:
The H-I Utica plant was built in 1905. The diamond with the UTK logo dates from 1905 until World War I. This logo is usually stamped into the reel seat, but also appears as a decal. The Trout logo decal was then used until 1929. It is rarely seen and is the most beautiful of the H-I decals. Next to appear was an elongated Double Diamond with Utica, NY inside; it was used until 1933. In 1934, a double-diamond logo including the banner reading Best by Test was introduced and was used until 1939. Next came the fanciest of all H-I decals featuring a bright red H-I on a white diamond and accompanied by two banners reading Fish Rod and Genuine Tonkin Cane. The decal of the early 1950's was rectangular with a small gold foil diamond logo. The final decal was a simple red diamond with a large white H-I.

IB Rods
Ron,
Thanks for the excellent info. Both rods indeed have the red on white diamond decal and the word "Chesepeake" handwritten on the blank in white ink just behind the decal. One rod has the double eyes and the other rod is missing the double eyes. They are appox 6' long and stout like boat rods. The varnish is old and cracked and reel seats corroded. Otherwise the wood and blank condition is undamaged or dinged. I'm not a collector but will probably clean them up and mount for display with the "Jaleoxe" (I can't believe they made logos that you can't read) reels that came with them.
Thanks again for sharing the info with me.
