The great cover-lock mystery!

Post by clinton_beeler »

Father has always said that the first thing changed on the Zebco 33 after production began was the spinnerhead. I have five of the six "field tester" prototypes and these were supposed to be identical to production save the fact that the covers are made of brass instead of aluminum. I also have two other early 33s one of which has no finish at all and marbalized crank knobs and the other wears a deep blue-green finish with small slots cut in the covers where the cover-lock would later go.

Does anyone out there know of the existence of a 33 without a cover-lock? None of mine have one. I've looked at the auction sites etc. I've never seen one. I'm starting to think that this was the last thing changed before production. Are all my 33s prototypes? (not impossible) Did Zebco ever sell 33s without them. If so, these would be the rarest production 33s. If not, am I going to have to break down and buy an old one just so I can say I own an early production version? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Regards,
Clinton
