Anyone knows about "Excelsior" reels ?

Post by Jean-Paul »

Just bought a reel called EXELSIOR (I added a picture in the Picture Rep.
named EXCEL). I bought it just because it looked nice and couldn't resist it... The tackle box on the picture has the name Exelsior as well.
One more reason why I bought it...

I'm not looking for the value, just would like to know a little more about it.
Where it was made ? Age ?
Thanks for any info.

Exelsior reel

Post by Steve K »

Jean-Paul..
The reel foot looks to be a Pennell type, thus most likely attributed to Montague. I have seen a Montague hard rubber reel with the steel pivot bearing on back and the name Exelsior on the face plate as well.
Exelsior is the name of a neat little town on the shores of Lake Minnetonka in Minnesota, and in the early 1900's-1940's was a famous tourist location on Lake Minnetonka, west of Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. I have a Minnetonka reel in my collection that was made by Montague.
This might be the connection.
Good luck.
