I just don't get that one...such a rare and unusual beast and the LEGALLY go out and get them by snagging!

Well in all respect the fish has better odds by being snagged at (which is only legal a short season there ) than dangling a live minnow at it like we do other species and or throwing a drag net out that indiscriminately catches all fish ,Turtles, Porpoises, sharks,etc.
I agree though it is a Rare catch but I suspect it is a small one in respect to whats really out there still on those .
We have Talipia in some of our warmer reservoirs here in Texas and it is legal to net ,stab, snag, grab,throw a rock at or spear any time and bout the only way to catch the critters since they don't eat nuttin but moss and doo doo.

Catch and Release may prove a bit less rewarding for the fish.

In Illinois it is legal to snag salmon in the fall when they're running upstream. They're going to die soon anyway.
