WHAT A SHOW!!!!!

Post by SWIM JIG »

:D :) :o 8) :P  :!: :?:  Well this day was a rather long one, Done the shaow in HOLIDAY OHIO,at the Remada inn, starting out at 4:15 this nice morning NO SNOW at ALL! I pulled into the INN around 7:15 now Carl said to pound hard an get them up! ha! they must have left word with the desk not to give me the room # , I am starving , Len is suposed to cook breakfast however he is no where to be found!I went to the set up room , I was told knock on room 136, dard I about broke it down NO ANSWERE, well off to the dining room, and here comes LEN out of it, carl and Dave O,roke are eating so i ordered Nice lare breakfast for a very big total of $4.15 2 eggs bacon toast bisket and all the coffee I could hold, heck it was beter the DENNYS and 1/3rd the money! Ok off we go to the set up room, then the fun begins! Now if none of you have ever met Len or Carl , HMMMNNN ! you are in for a treat, I am between them, and the next thing I know len is selling me on one side, Carl to my left< Talk about sales people these two could sell the lakes water and ask for and get change! I am showing Carl the FLO LINE reel, he is selling me a Fraser -Kilian NEO CASTER made in England, next Dave comes in with some spools i told him I would buy, the Jim Madden comes up, I let him take my 3 socalled fly reels to study, and another south bend to find parts for, Then dave comes back with that unusual set upp he caleed a trot line, after I saw it , memories Of my grandad using one like it came back of some 64 years ago , He wont sell it just yet however allowed me to take pics of it! Now the fun realy begins, len starts to SDELL me items Now unless you never met Len you just cant say NO to LEN! I make some quick rounds of other folks tables , and found something clinton Beeler said he couldnt find for me a (Original (lash Master reel manual with a pictorial break down! WHEEE! now i can LUBE mine! Then they start a AUCTION and that guy wound up the volume so loud they could hear it in INDIANA , OHIO AND MICHIGAN at the same time, well enough is enough, I was nice the first time and ask him to please turn it down, didnt work the next time , well it got turned down as a lot of folks didnt like it, however at 6ft 1in and 362 lbs I genearly get my point accross! Things get beter more trades, more people from ORCA etc, i went up with 14 reels to show and came bqack with 37 more than I had, bought parts reels from BILL Muth, the club VP also the Lashmaster PAPER, etc With so much extra Weight My gas millage started to go DOWN, Folks If you were not there! you missed a bunch Of wonderfull folks, ah yes it come around again next year! be lloking foward to IT! Montpellier

Post by Jim Madden »

Milt's correct. It was a pleasurable show, and it's outgrowing the room provided. Montpellier is in the middle of nowhere, but it's a stone's throw from the the junction of three states: Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan. All three were well represented. Maybe that's one of the attendance secrets, but when you think of the concentration of tackle companies within 2 hours of that point, it's no wonder that the tables were bulging with finds and that the aisles were full of lookers. It's not unusual for me to have to choose between 3 auctions with tackle and a tackle show in one weekend. We have Noblesville and Edwardsburg shows coming up, and the auctions are lined up for weeks. Hunting is good in the Midwest if the weather isn't. Good to see Len, Milt, Carl, Bill and many more friends. I added a couple of tournament casters to play with and an early SB fly reel I've been studying along with what Milt lent me to look at. Next year I'll be there on Friday.

I found it!!

Post by SWIM JIG »

:D :) :o  8)  :!: :?:  Jim that pesky screw that droped off that reel, well it rolled under my lunch box all the reels were in, no need to find a new one! If that autioneer dont remeber me I too will come up on a friday night, and I will get at least 3-4 tables, It may be in the middle of nowhere, however its very easy to get to! Think we need to keep this a class 9 government secret or can we let the rest of ORCA members in on a good thing? I liked it as they TRADE! not like some places cash only! Thanks for inviting me! OHIO SHOW

Post by cws/carl schultz »

well i may as well put in my 2 cents len sawisch, jack bright and i,carl schultz left lansing appox 12 noon arrived at 1:15[len was pushing it] from the time we left lansing it was all exway and motel can be seen from the highway couldnt check in till 2pm so jack bought lunch at the motel restrant excellent food and very reasonably priced by the time we were done we checked in and had only got first load in room and someone came to look[very promising] took about an hour to get everything out and they decended like locust from room trading i wound up at about$400 closed up at about 10pm ready for the show 7am not slept good but off to restrant for breakfast again excellent and reasonable started setting up after eight our room right next to show and just went out the window with the stuff walked all of 30feet to my table when show opened there was a steady line of people as is usual i started selling baits but then had some reel sales an eppinger 15 pfluger buckeye heddon 3-25 a boxed h&i flyer a fraser neo caster[oddball one that milt liked] and some other reels i dont remember had a number of folks tempted with my talbots but no sale there i wound up at approx $1600 gross sales which after not having been to a show since dowagiac was very welcome for my reel fund i made a promise to my self that the hobby would be self supporting which it always has been but also while i love the orca national [and i would not change its format]it just is not a big selling show as most are senior collectors and just dont need alot to add to thier coolections
and as i said would not change the educational aspects of it but thats why i need a few of these lure/selling shows will be doing another one april 1&2 in west branch this was the one held at webers inn for sometime and is 2 days long will post info later but as far as montpeller they will see me again for sure[ it was very nice to see so many orcans[not the whales lol] and jim had hit it on the head it was an easy drive from 3 different states so will post when i hear of another one and maybe see you in west branch

What followed me home . . .

Post by Len Sawisch »

Here are the reels I brought home from Ohio. The little Blackstone from 1939 Bronson production (ask Bill Muth about the Jameson connection) has the spring-loaded handle knobs, sculpted plastic insert, stabelizing screw through the handle nut, double-posted gear bridge, duo-pawl, slide click and dial drag with black anodized plates, for a lot less than ORCA dues!
Image

And then Wild Bill talked me into the Larchmont because of the extremely sensative drag which can be adjusted while fish-fighting (which I rarely do). Then Milt showed us both how the adjustment lever actually pulls out and can be re-established for even more adjustment range! How could I pass up the opportunity to take that apart!
Image

Great to see so many Orcanians there and just as tickled to find that Bronson before they did!

VIC

Milton, The are listed in the Airex cat. as having the color India black, an no mention of green, yet the green one is the one generally found. The finish is a hammered finish. Airex says that it retrieves 24" of line per handle revolution and the gear ratio is 2.75 to 1. Also, how many spools are 3" in diam.! Just a couple of specs. for you. Bob
