the retiring mr julius vom hofe

Post by marius »

not much has been written about the famous reelmaker julius vom hofe - and not even a photography of the man has been found to date. below is the information i have found so far - and if you know any other facts about the man and his life - however small - i encourage you to add it here in this thread. thank you.

from the schlegel’s american families of german ancestry (1917):

«julius vom hofe, second child and son of friedrich and wilhelmina (lühling) vom hofe, was born at the family home in the town of altena, province of westphalia, kingdom of prussia, germany, august 6, 1837. he obtained his early educational training in the volks-schule of his native town, where he continued his studies up to 1849, in which year his mother, wihelmina (lühling) vom hofe, emigrated with her children to the united states. having first arranged their family affairs and property interests, the mother with her children took passage on the sailing vessel «kirkwood», upon which they embarked from the city of antwerp and set sail for the harbor of new york city, where they finally landed after a tedious and stormy voyage across the atlantic. upon their arrival at castle garden in new york city, the family were met by the husband and father , who had preceded them to this country.

the family at once took up their abode in new york city, where young julius attended the public schools, and soon after, laying aside his schoolbooks, he became associated with his father in his work of manufacturing fishing reels, and under his father’s direction and guidance, he was enabled to acquire a practical knowledge of the various details and technique of the work, as well as of the trade. in the course of time julius vom hofe became identified with his father’s budiness interests, and he was thus actively engaged in this line of enterprise up to the time of his father’s death, when the son julius undertook the management of his father’s interests on his own account. in this undertaking the young manufacturer met with a marked degree of success as the logical result of his skill and ingenuity in the manufacture of his wares. julius vom hofe not only continued the business along the lines and methods which his father had adopted, but in the course of time, he enabled himself to devise and perfect a number of valuable improvements pertaining to fishing reels and their accessories, etc, which he had patented. these devices were in course of time placed on public exhibition, and in 1893, during the world’s fair at chicago, illinois, and again in 1904, at the great exhibition held in st. louis, missouri, julius vom hofe received the highest award in the form of a gold medal, for thoroughness and perfection of his fishing reels.

during the many years of his commercial activities in the eastern district of the borough of brooklyn, julius vom hofe became identified with the social and fraternal interests of the community wherein he resided. he was an active member of the arion singing society, and he was also an active member of copernicus lodge of the free and accepted masons, in the eastern district of the borough of brooklyn.

he died at his home in keap street, borough of brooklyn, april 19, 1907.

married, in new york city, in 1861, clara wittich, born in the capital city of coburg, in the grand duchy of saxe-coburg-gotha, germany, march 8, 1839. clara (wittich) vom hofe died at her home in the borough of brooklyn, june 17, 1913.

issue of julius and clara (wittich) vom hofe:

• amelia, born july 24, 1864, in the eastern district of brooklyn. she obtained her educational training in the turn verein schule on meserole street, and completed her studies in st paul's school in the city of brooklyn.
• minnie, born august 1, 1866, in the eastern district of brooklyn. she obtained her educational training in the public school no. 19. married, june 6, 1895, philip neidig, born may 21, 1867. they have no issue.
• clara, born october 1, 1868; died in january 1873.
• julius, jr., born november 12, 1871, of whom forward.
• anna, born may 27, 1877. she obtained her educational training in public school no. 19. she married thorkild avensae [avensoe]. they have no issue.
• edward, born april 21, 1879; died october 3, 1903.
• alfred, born september 21, 1882.»
..........
mr vom hofe’s obituary, from brooklyn daily eagle, april 22, 1907:

«julius vom hofe, who died friday at his residence 322 keap street, after a long illness, was a famous fishing reel manufacturer, his particular kind of reel being known throughout the world because of its fine workmanship and rewinding attachment. he had been a resident for many years of the eastern district and his factory adjoins his residence, at the corner of keap and south fifth streets. he had a summer residence in rockaway, on bayside place, and he was a great lover of boating and fishing. he was a man of quiet habits and was never part of public life. he was a member of the arion singing society for many years and also belonged to copernicus lodge of freemasons. he was born in germany 71 years ago, and came to this country when a lad. he is survived by his wife clara wittig. funeral services will be held this evening.»
..........
mr vom hofe’s obituary, from forest & stream magazine, may 4, 1907:

«because he was of a quiet, retiring disposition, few anglers knew the late julius vom hofe — whose death was announced in these columns last week — but they were all familiar with the class of work he put into his fishing reels. mr. vom hofe’s fishing reel factory, on south fifth street, near the brooklyn end of the new williamsburg bridge, adjoined his residence in keap street, and he was seldom found far away from home or shop. when the fishing was good he might be found at his little cottage in bay side place, hammels, rockaway beach, or in his fishing boat near by. generally he went out alone, and only those in whom he confided knew how great was his store of knowledge concerning practical fishing as well as reel making. jamaica bay was an open book to him, and his special favorite was the striped bass, whose haunts he knew intimately.

mr. vom hofe’s birthplace was altena, westphalen, germany. he came to the united states in 1848, his twelfth year. he began the manufacture of reels in 1857, in new york city, and five years later removed to brooklyn. his reels were exhibited at the world’s fairs in chicago and st. louis, at both of which the highest awards and gold medals were received by him. four years ago his son edward, died, and since then his health began to fail, the end being due to apoplexy. he is survived by mrs. vom hofe, two sons, julius and alfred, and three daughters. his sons will continue in the business in which they were trained by their father.»

What a wonderful compilation af facts about Julius! Thanks much for adding this to our knowledge base. I still have had no luck finding a pic of him....sounds like he was a bit more private perhaps, than his brother.

thank you john - and i sincerely hope that more information will be added soon.

today the property at 322 keap st in brooklyn is owned by the new york city department of environmental - and unfortunately only consist of a piece of land - a rectangle measuring 100 ft x 22 ft - so the building itself has been demolished at some point.

what bothers me - is that we don’t have anything from julius vom hofe’s own mind - other than his reels: none of his thoughts or views. his voice seems to be sealed with seven seals. for now.

if anyone is clever enough to find old photos of his building at the corner of 322 keap st/south 5th street, williamsburg(h), brooklyn, new york 11211-6408 - it would be a feat and highly appreciated!

cool to hear mike - and thanks.

here is a curious note about julius vom hofe’s youngest son alfred.

from the brooklyn daily eagle, new york, thursday, september 28, 1905:

«alfred von [vom] hofe missing.

members of young man’s family, mysteriously absent from home, fear foul play.

the police of the bedford avenue station have been asked to assist in the search for alfred von [vom] hofe, 24 years old, who has disappeared in a mysterious manner from his home at 322 keap street, where he lived with his parents. the young man, who is described as being steady and industrious, was engaged with his father, who is wealthy, in the manufacture of fishing tackle. the wellequipped shop adjoins the dwelling on south fifth street.

young von [vom] hofe was last seen on saturday last, when the shop was closed at noon. he left the house without explaining to his parents where he was going, as was his usual custom. there was nothing about his actions during the morning to indicate that he was in any other but his usual cheerful mood, and his parents are beginning to fear he may have met with foul play, as he usually carried considerable money and jewelry about his person. the members of the family have searched in almost every imaginable direction without being able to obtain the slightest trace of his whereabouts.

the young man, who was quite an athlete, was a member of the central branch of the young men’s christian association. he is described as being 5 feet 7 inches in height, weighing 120 pounds, with blue eyes and a florid complexion. when last seen he wore a mixed gray suit.»
……….
i succeeded to find a photo of julius vom hofe’s residence at 322 keap street - although the building in the photo is indeed lilliputian on screen. it is seen from the south 5th street - where the buildings main facade seems to be located - and looking west from hooper street - hooper street running parallel with keap street.

south 5th street looking west from hooper street, 1923. i have magnified julius vom hofe’s building complex - the one with two pillars (raised square pillars  ) on top.

Man, now you are going to drive us crazy!.....did they ever find Alfred??? ... "Go West, Young man, Go West"???? Perhaps he tired of following Dad? Would rather hear that than he was found in an alley. If the latter, then there should be some report of it, I would think?

haha - i certainly don’t want to drive anyone nuts because of alfred - so here comes the answer to the mystery:

from the brooklyn daily eagle, new york, friday, september 29, 1905:

«alfred von [vom] hofe returns

alfred von [vom] hofe, 25 years old, who was reported by his parents as missing from his home at 322 keap street since saturday afternoon, returned at 11 o’clock last night. he made a satisfactory explanation of his absence to his parents, and this morning told others who made inquirie at his home that he had been stopping at stamford, conn., and that there was no necessity for all the fuss raised over his absence. he declared he was fully competent to take care of himself.»
……….
wow - cocky lad 8)

the distance from his home to stamford is at least 40 miles - so quite a trip. i don’t really trust his words: i can vividly see him smoking opium and party on at some naughty place. we are talking about a man at 24 - living with his parents - pockets bulging with cash & jewelry. i say that is an unusual guy. hey - «usually carried considerable money and jewelry about his person» :!:

on the other side - the episode bear witness of a tightly knitted family - where the unusual rarely happened. he probably had held back for a long time: old parents - handsome young lad - big wallet - new york city nightlife…

alfred should live on for many, many years - but more of that later!

Do any direct descendants of the vom Hofe family still live in this country? Someone that perhaps has old family photos? Even I have family photos going back to the 19th century. Just curious. Great thread.

i am absolutely convinced that this thread shall eventually bring the family portraits to the table. julius vom hofe - having a stellar reputation and career for more than 50 years - a living legend himself - and has a well respected father in the same trade - and a charismatic superstar younger brother + children and nephews and loyal workers that continues the same craft and trade for decades. from his father friedrich to otto zwarg - for more than 100 years they never compromised with their wares. and all this in a glowing hotspot of the world: new york.

no - the photos do exist - and we will find them - one by one. these figures are our heroes. we want to see and we want to know.

so many famous painters - both living and dead - have their own museums and international exhibitions - and their art are sold for tremendous amounts. compared to this - our beloved old reels and fishing tackle are still incredibly affordable: most of us will be able to acquire a highlight if we really want to. not so with a rembrandt or munch. i think many of us will gasp a little in a relative near future when we see the best and rarest tackle being sold for staggering amounts - reaching into 6 digits and beyond*. diamonds are boring - fishing is life.

so get your fingers typing and click the mouse and dive into the genealogy of the vom hofe family :type:

* and still - there will always be affordable and great fishing tackle around for everyone to use. not everyone feel called to become a nutty collector

great information dennis - well done - and thank you mike for the link.

at least we now know the exact date of julius vom hofe’s arrival to new york. concerning conflicting dates of birth: hearsay, misunderstandings, guesstimates and deliberate falsification are always things to take into consideration.

and to slippery journalists writing a bit quick: just have a look at albert vom hofe’s disappearance: on thursday september 28, 1905 he is stated in brooklyn daily eagle as being 24 years of age - but with some magic he is 25 years the day after. actually he became 23 years on september 21, exactly one week before his vanishing. then again - he states in his passport as being born on september 25, 1879 - that would have made him 26!
……….
from the brooklyn daily eagle, new york, sunday, february 19, 1922:

«deaths

vom hofe — on friday, feb. 17, 1922, amelia vom hofe, at her residence, 205 quincy st., daughter of the late julius and clara vom hofe. funeral services will be held at the lefferts place chapel, 86 lefferts pl., near grand av., brooklyn, on monday, feb. 20, at 2 p.m.»
……….
from the brooklyn daily eagle, new york, monday, february 20, 1922:

obituary of miss amelia vom hofe.

«miss amelia vom hofe died on friday at her home, 265 quincy st. she was the daughter of the late julius and clara vom hofe. her father was the inventor and manufacturer of the vom hofe fishing reel and famous as a deep sea fisherman in the south.»
……….
miss amelia vom hofe, although public records state her name as being emily - emily being the english equivalent to the typical german name amalia - seems to have been unmarried all her life and her occupation simply says "housework", same as her sister minnie, what that might be. she was the first child of julius and clara vom hofe, born july 24, 1864. according to public records she still lived at 322 keap street in june 1915, together with her brothers julius jr. and alfred, and also her sister minnie and minnie’s husband philip neidig. quite the family that holds together!

in her obituary miss emily vom hofe’s home address is described being both at 205 quincy street and 265 quincy street, but since 205 quincy street is recorded as have being built in 1931, it is therefor more probable that she actually had her residence at 265 quincy street, brooklyn, a three storied 3,000 sqft house built in 1899, within walking distance to her lifelong family home at keap street.

to understand more of how julius vom hofe’s reel factory actually operated in real life, i here bring some interesting facts about his business.

a u.s. federal consensus schedule for 1879-1880 says:

Great compilation of info, Marius, but i don't quite understand those "daily wage" numbers. That would mean a skilled laborer was making $25 an hour and basic laborer, $15 an hour for a 10 hour day in 1879???! I guess I would figure those numbers to be off 10x!

maple grove cemetery is a rural victorian cemetery located on the backbone of long island. this lovely and historic 65-acre cemetery opened in 1875, and is located in kew gardens in the borough of queens, new york city. within this tranquil sanctuary are extraordinary monuments with lush landscaping that continues to offer a serene escape from new york city. beyond its gates are the resting places of those who left their mark on the world - and here rests the remanence of julius vom hofe. oh, how i wish i could read all the inscriptions on that beautiful tombstone… rest in peace my friend.

i have come to conclude something nearly unbelievable: julius and clara vom hofe had no grandchildren. not even one. zero. nada!
with 7 children, this is truly extraordinary and highly unusual:

• emily: widow, no children.
• minnie: married, no children.
• clara: died young, no children.
• julius jr.: unmarried, no children.
• anna: married, no children.
• edward: died young, no children.
• alfred: the ever traveling globetrotter and bachelor, no children.

so, unfortunately mark, the awful truth is that there are no direct descendants from julius vom hofe. we therefor have to look into the albums of their friends and julius' siblings. another way is passports. so far i have found two from alfred, the youngest family member, and the last of the lot to say good bye to this world. the passports are issued 1910 and 1922, but the photos are missing...

this is interesting. i am now even more determined now to find an image. just anything will do.

alfred is also the one that inherited the accumulated belongings from all the others. more of that tomorrow - so hold onto your hats - it's gonna be fun!

thank you steve. i took the liberty to upscale and brush up the file to make it more legible + added the u.s. world war II draft registration card 1942 as well.

in the 1918 card he states that he still lives at 322 keap street, brooklyn, and that his nearest relative is his sister emily vom hofe. further, that his height is medium, build medium, color of hair grey.

in the 1942 card, under 'name and address of person who will always know your address:
ernest worret, 321 east 43. street, n.y.c. further alfred states himself as being unemployed.

later i will come back to this mr ernest worret, an englishman and private secretary. he was born 1882/1883 and died in 1946. the two of them, alfred and ernest, lives together in a number of apartments at manhattan for many years, and they travel together around the world extensively from the 1920s onward.

as we have seen, so far, the members of the julius vom hofe family line are pretty much faceless. however, when julius’ youngest child alfred is involved, then usually something special is going on.

i start off this post with a note from the brooklyn eagle, new york. it was on print thursday, october 12, 1913, and marks the end point to one of the greatest eras in reel history, that started with julius jr. vom hofe’s grandfather friedrich, in the 1850’s.
..........
obituary of julius jr vom hofe, november 12. 1871 [1872] - october 10. 1939.

«vom hofe — julius jr., died tuesday, oct. 10, son of the late julius and clara vom hofe, manufacturer of fishing reels. funeral from fairchild chapel, 86 lefferts place, on friday, oct. 13, at 2 p.m.»
……….

then, in december the same year, this exciting news can be read in the newspaper, which surely got people buzzing, even for new york to be:

just wow! this sum equals to millions of dollars today, and is of course very telling of the vom hofe family: we are talking about a small family run business - not a corporate by any means - yet they are undoubtly extremely successful also when it comes to cash.

to put it into perspective:

in the same newspaper, under ‘real estate for sale’, is a an expensive modern house in brooklyn, ad says: 8 room, 3 baths, 2-car garage, large plot, finest location, asking $15,500’. most other houses for sale costs +/- $5,000.
