Good Mornnig, I have just became a member of ORCA. I like to read and post on this site, and have a lot to learn about old reels. My main interest is in South Bend Reels at this time. I live in Oregon and have found a few nice older reels at garage sale and that got me started. I have collected lures for several years. I have to be a low budget collector but it is still a great hobby. Thanks for the board, I really enjoy it, Dan Uchytil (qwapaw)
Welcome
From one new member to another, let me be the first to say welcome! I have already met a large number of very informed and generous people in ORCA. I think you will enjoy the benefits of membership.
Sincerely,
Dr. Todd E.A. Larson

Dan, I will be second to welcome you. There is no such thing as a "Low End" collector unless you are setting in a recliner. We treat the Meek, Milan, Snyder and South Bend collectors all alike. Your first task should be getting a copy of Jim Madden's book on South Bend reels. It consist of a overview of many years of observations of SB reels and is a wealth of information.
Welcome aboard!

welcome aboard
Welcome to ORCA, Dan. I hope to be editor of the Reel News, come July when the changeover of officers takes place. That's assuming no "hanging chads" in the vote counting, of course. I'd welcome input about the ORCA magazine and I hope you keep your thinking cap on in the future about articles for the Reel News or things you'd like to see in it.

Welcome
Dan, I'm glad you decided to join. I'm sorry that the copies of the South Bend book are gone. I ran an advanced edition during the Lansing nationals (mostly for members) thinking the hardback with pictures would be following on its heals in a year or two. " The finest plans of mice and men ..." I'll be working hard on it this summer. It's surprising how much new information has shown up since then. I'm planning on adding the fly reels also. In the spring, 1999, issue of Reel News, the late Jim Music and I put together an article that had a chart of many of the SB reel variations. It's old information and isn't complete but it would be a good reference for starters. The back issues are for sale. I would always be able to answer questions you might have and can put you in touch with four other SB collectors also. Let me know how I can help. Jim
Dan,
Glad to have you join. It is incredible the knowledge this ORCA group of folks can provide. Never fear to post a problem. There will be an answer to any legit question or concern. Good luck with SB. Most everyone has a few gross somewhere. Suggest you bookmark oldreels.com to get accurate info on many aspects of reel collection.

Welcome aboard Dan,
Pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee, and let's talk reels! You have come to the right place. We have had several standout new members recently it seems.
The board has built up a wealth of information over the years that you can search through. The Reel News Magazine is awesome, every single issue. Between these two sources, you will find stuff that you will never find in any books. The people on here are very generous with their information and knowledge as well.
So have fun!

I just wanted to take a minute and say thanks for all the warm regards to a new member. I get kind of excited hearing about all the old reels you guys collect. I hope to learn a lot from you guys and may ask some pretty basic question, but for over 50 years a reel was just to catch fish with and if it didn't work you got another one. Now I want to learn them inside and out. I am starting with South Bend because there are a lot of them out there and I think they are a pretty attractive reel when cleaned up. Thanks again, Dan Uchytil. PS, How long until the word guest dissapears from my posts?
