Engraved Reel - need help with ID and Value please!

Post by Bruce McDowell »

Does anyone know anything about this reel and have an idea of value. It is about as pretty a reel as I have seen - even the reel case is neat. I hope the picture links below will open, otherwise feel free to e-mail me for pictures. I appreciate you help. ()

Yep! Looks like a Bronson made reel

Post by orourke »

Bronson had that die stamp and used it on at least three reels that it put its own name on and many more that it sold to various stores such as Sears and Spiegel. No doubt in my mind Bronson made it and may I say it is a beautiful reel.

Hex end caps are also on the Bronson 5000, but these are smooth hexes. Wonder if the 5000 reel was sold with the same elaborate case.

Also, the Bronson Brooklure No. 25 Anti-BL level wind has the same exact plate designs on both sides of reel, but no hex caps. The Brooklure has a 40 on the foot which indicates mfg timeframe as pre WW2. You may find photo of the Brooklure on K White 133-9299 where it is incorrectly named Brookslure.

After reading these posts, expected to find more like reels in my Bronson bin. Well, not the case. I only found one other reel with the same sideplate stamping, i.e., a Silver Princess 3720.

Reel is stamped Bronson inside the headplate rim. No hex caps, but the Handle has identical engraving, with different nobs. Reel has a head plate spacer which has small paralled grooves across the rim all around. Quite attractive reel. No tailplate spacer. Foot is marked "PAT. APP. FOR IN U.S.A. 38." Somewhat earlier than the Brooklure reel.

Bruce, did you check the foot for any markings? Appears your reel was made circ 1937-1941, maybe earlier, unless it was made after WW2. Case looks to fancy for wartime build.

Does anyone have Bronson Ads in this timeframe?

Guyz: here's one I've been saving in "kit" form for several years. The reel will clean up, but I quit on it because the clicker had succumbed to water that had seeped in at some time...an end cap is missing, and a corner was filed or broken off the rod seat (sounds really good, eh?). regardless, the faceplates are in great shape, as is the handle and the levelwind...and the price is right, if anyone wants to put it back in the game or sees parts they can use. It is labelled " Bronson Commander 3250"...yours for the postage!

Guys, I have a 1940 Bronson catalogue (Don't tell anyone) and the # 3720 Silver Priccess is listed it there. It is the same reel as the one in the beginning of this thread. It also shows those 1940 Ford Lug Nuts as bearing caps. Hope this helps.

Harvey, Good Photo. Looks like my Silver Princes except for the smooth black spacer. My 3720 has the OD ribbed spacer. The Black spacer in the photo looks just like in the Bronson Silver King 3700. I also found "another Bronson 3700 marked " Silver Princess" , but not with the die stamp endplates.

This looks like a very neat line of reels. Any other Bronson collectors out there?

A little more research!

The 1931 and the 1933 catalogues show NO hex bearing caps.
The 1934 catalogue shows the following reels with HEX Jeweled caps;
#5000 Reel-O-Mine
#4900 Sports Pal
#4700 Sports Pal
#4800 Gold Seal
The #3700 (?) Silver Princess has round caps, as does the #1010 Veteran None of these are engraved as I can see. Someone else can fill in the missing dates as that is all the information I have.
