Orvis Bass Model

Post by Tyler Thompson »

A while back I purchased an Orvis wide spool bass model perforated reel. The handle is counter-balanced and the knob does not taper in the middle, so I assumed it was a replacement but in checking my reference books I can't find a picture of the bass model. Anyone know if the handle of the bass model was different than handle of the narrow spool version. Thanks, Tyler

Tyler,
I took a look at all the pictures I could find of Orvis Bass models, and can only find tapered handle grasps. similar to the regular trout model. The most recent pic was from the May 2003 Lang's catalog and again in the Doc Herr auction from Nov. 2003. All the earlier catalogs with bass models show the same tapered grasp.
Hope that helps some.

Jim, thanks. I am an idiot. Now I remember where I saw all those pictures of Orvis bass models. I just never thought to look in the Lang catalogs. I appreciate your help and I agree, it appears the original handle would have been a half-handle with the regular orvis knob.

Tyler: That reel sounds like one I used to own. If so, the handle was very unusual, but I believe was original. The knob was not original. If it is not the same reel, if there are two, it might lead credence to the idea that the crank is original.

Swim Jig, not to sound like I'm pleaing my case, but based on what I've seen in the past, I think I have a ways to go before Len is off the hook. Also, thanks Geezer, I will keep my eyes open for another bass model with a similar handle. Tyler

Tyler,

I have owned an Orvis Bass Model with a full handle and considered it correct as Tony Flynn had one in his collection too and I know I've seen another. I will see if I can turn up a picture.

Dean, I may be mistaken, but I think Tony's is the one I have now. I will keep my eyes open for others and try to check some of the old advertisements. The handle on mine is very similar to those on some Julius VomHofe reels I have. Tyler
