Rants... Shark Week 2015

Post by Tightlines666 »

Sigh (shaking head, while holding it down)
:( :( :(

Discovery channel..what happened to you?

I remember growing up with Jaque Cousteau and other truely educational programing available. Now days its all made-for-ratings, copy-your-neighbor, reality TV injected with sensationalized drama and misinformation.

Has it really come to this?

True, there are some good facts, recent research findings, and cutting-edge cinematography laced throughout. But it has become exceedingly difficult for the layman to distinguish fact from fiction. Unfortunately, all too many believe what they hear on tv. Particuarily information portrayed in a trusted network like The Discovery Channel.

Some of this shark week programing is not too far removed from this highly rated show proving the existance of mermaids...

Animal Planet's: "Monster Week"

Btw..I have yet to meet an animal I consider a monster, is this what we are trying to teach or kids?

Maybe they need to take a page out of The History Channel's playbook. Although they have a bunch of these low-production cost, high ratings, scripted and staged 'reality' TV shows. At least when they have an educational
program it actually does educate you.

Maybe its just my perspective, but it is a universal truth that all shark (and most Fishery) biologist hate shark week. Except maybe those few, who were able to 'cash in'.

Ok, I'm done now.

I agree there is a lot of "crap" on TV these days. I don't have to watch it though.

Question: Considering all those brilliant minds at work for years now searching for Big Foot, why haven't they found him-or her? Inquiring minds want to know!

So, now I'm supposed to believe that mermaids don't exist? And that "Mountain Men" isn't "reality". What?

I have to admit that I do watch this show. My question every week this season is why doesn't the guy who is walking alone over the Alaskan mountain range ask the camera crew for a ride?

Inquiring minds want to know!!!

What's wrong with Discovery channel? - how about History Channel and Ancient Aliens?

Smithsonian is a decent channel.

O yea, I forgot all about the Amcient Aliens.

True. The Smithsonian is like my new favorite channel, and I still like NOVA programs on PBS, and some of the outdoor hunting and fishing programs. Emphasis on SOME.

The Shark Week episode of the Killer Whale drowning the Great White Shark by turning it belly up was a little better than most Jacques Cousteau episodes I remember.

But I do agree about most of the other mountain men seen "struggling" in the Alaska landscape. I always wonder how the guy walking behind them hoisting the 80 lb. camera must feel.

My favorite is Survivorman since he films his own adventures alone.
