Abu Ambassadeur identification help needed

Post by zeck »

Dear fellow reel collectors,

My focus has always been fixed-spool, but on impulse, bought a rare Abu. Well, I am not at all familiar with Abu but I bought it from a reputable collector in the UK.

I would appreciate if someone could shed some light on this reel. The front plate has just Ambassadeur engraved. No Abu nor Record. It also says No. 5000, and A.B. URFABRIKEN-SVANGSTA and SWEDEN. The serial number is 75465.

Can anyone shed some light on this reel? For example, when was it built/sold. Production numbers?

I have uploaded the pictures to this link.

Appreciate any help.
cheers, zeck
ps. Btw, if anyone has rare spinning reels, I would be happy to consider a trade. I think I should head back to the OFSR fold. I did say it was purely on impulse that I bought it. 8)

Hi Zeck, when the ambassadeurs first came out they were Record Ambassadeurs, however some marketing problems withe the Swiss company of the same name saw a change to Abu Ambassadeur. Between this period from 1957 to 1959 the reels were just marked Ambassadeur.
