A-Square's Fluid Hub Anti Backlash Attachment

Post by drexelantiques »

I was contacted by someone a couple of weeks ago for information about this anti-backlash device. The man was nice enough to send me a couple of them, in the box. Below is the information I have on it, including some pictures. The last picture is a scam of the instructions that came with it, and it is a large, 350K file. The other three pictures of the device and box are smaller.

The box is a paper cube, about 1 3/8 inch on a side. The top is red, the bottom white. On the top it says:

"A-Square's Fluid Hub Model No. 1 Automatic Anti-Backlash Attachment - For Penn Reels Using No. 40-60 Bearing. Pat. Pending A-Square Mfg. Co. Weymouth 88 Mass. "

The company was located at 22 Glendale Street. Apparently this device was filled with oil. I do not think the sping shown in the pictures came with the device, I think that is off of a reel it was intended to fit.

There were 4 models, and one variation on model 1.

Model 1 and 1 A fit many Penn models.

Model 2 Fit Ocean City, J.C. Higgins, and Ward's Sport King.

Model 3 fit All Coxe-Bronson salt water reels except crossbolt models.

Model 4 fit Pflueger Interocean, Capitol, Ohio, and Temco reels.

The device itself is heavy, has a screw on one end, is knurled, and is marked PAT APLD FOR. Looks to be nickel plated brass.

Has anyone else seen these devices? Any further information on it?

I thought this was something ORCA members would like to see.

Post by SWIM JIG »

:) :? 8) :!: :?:  Ok I just looked a several new in the box ones of these , No springs the paperwork says use the spring off the bearing cap that gets removed! also my papers say the weight of oil can be changed, however it looks as it may be a messy afair, they say was out old oil with kerosien , Never used one yet! Most of the folks I have talked to used them On PENNS, and not to cast however trowl with. Yes the artical in the reel news is very helpful, I have never seen a small one like would fit a srd Pfluger bait caster ie. Knobby, or a shakespere reg caster, Did they make that size? Col. m. lorens in a OHIO SNOW STORM! aka SWIM JIG
