Hi folks:

Hoping that you who know more than I (i.e., all of you) can help me with a little background: my dad had a Shakespeare Sportcast Standard 1977 casting reel, with jewelled bearing caps and mother-of toilet-seat crank side spacer and knobs, which he had amongst his gear as long as I can remember, which is way too durn long (yes, I do remember watching Captain Kangaroo when I was a kid). It's in real nice shape, plating is good, not scarred up- my dad was a fly/spin fisherman and didn't use it to fish with. It's marked "patented" un the foot. Can any of y'all give me some background on this puppy (age, etc.)? Thanks.

Pete,
That reel was made from 1930 till 1955 in a bunch of varaitions. What is the model number on it? That will get us to a closer date. Only the earliest did not have the burlite head ring. They are collectable and very fishable.
Let me know,

Pete,
Assuming the it is a Model "GD" we can get closer than that. The "GD" was produced from 12/2/46 till 7/31/49.
It is listed in the 1947 catalogue as being able to hold 50yd of 12lb test Wexford line and sold for $11.00.

Harvey:

As usual, you're on the money- it is a model GD, with yellow (or yellowed)
head plate spacer and knobs.

Thanks again,

pete
