Adult Beverages at the National

Post by Tom E. »

Just a head's up. West Columbia is dry except for beer, So if you would like some adult refreshments (spirits or wine) it's a good idea to pick them up along the way from the Airport. Don't panic if not successful, we can sent a runner the 12 miles to the closest liquor store.

Can I place my order now...?

Post by Jim Schottenham »

What? No Middleton Extra rare single malt Scotch? Hmmm...that's OK, as long as they have Labatt's blue, I'll be fine. They do, right!?!?!

Get together

Post by Brian F. »

I liked the little informal get together that happened on Wed afternoon in the hotel lounge last year at Fife. Definitely not the stuffy cocktail reception but nice and comfortable with big cushy chairs where the group just sat around talking about...well...what else but reels. Very nice way to get to know everybody.

Brian,
I will be there around 1:00 Wed afternoon. A little get together sounds good to me but I must warn you. By Friday afternoon, most of you guys will have seen enough of me! Just ask the guys that went to Columbia and Lansing!

Oh yea, Tom:
Does the motel rooms have a Fridge in them? What about a coffee maker? (Just want to be prepared!)

Columbia Site!

Post by el Lawrence »

I did some quick research and found a nice web site that covers a lot of those questions inquiring minds want to know

Check it out: http://orcaonline.org/images/pixel.gif?index.htm

You will note we even have indoor plumbing in Texas... Yes the conditions in Columbia Lakes are FAR from primitive.

Looks like everyone is good for the coffee in the room as well as nifty places to get it elsewhere... As it says on the site, COTTAGES have a full kitchen facility... (Though I don't plan to do too much cooking...)
As Tom points out in his "dry" talk... they DON'T stop you from bringing the beverage of your choice in, Columbia just doesn't have it all on tap. However they most likely have your basic mixers; club soda, coke, branch water, etc.
I will be driving in (4WD V8 SUV not Mini Cooper) so I plan to come "fully equiped" with anything I think I need and with enough to share a little in the beverage category...
I imagine everyone will be well taken care of... this is afterall a southern state :D
We might want to check with some of our Canadian members (are any coming?) on that Canadian beer... I think it is available here in the San Antonio area... I imagine there will be no shortage of "Cerveza" in a variety of choices... we just gotta make sure about the "Lima" to go with... Hmmm that is funny, can't seem to type the word canadian without getting the emoticon...

MY BIGGEST CONCERN is that someone brings one or two of the reels I need!

Thanks for the heads-up, Lorraine! Of course, coming from a completely dry county, W. Columbia sounds like a regular Gomorrah to me. I'll stop by Spec's on the way and pick up my friends Geo. Dickel, Jack Daniels and W.L. Weller.

And if anybody is bringing a spare Shakespeare Style A, we need to talk!

Spirits in trade for hard to find Pflueger reels...

Post by el Lawrence »

I would be happy to bring adult beverage to trade for the Pfluegers I am looking for... (see list attached) :P

Seriously though... if anyone has special needs (like REAL ones, not oddball reels or strange food items) email one of us "hosts" and we will see what we can do to help you out with arangements. I see on the web site where Columbia is handicap accessible, etc. I am sure their fine dining facilities can also accommodate special diet needs if given a "heads up"...

Just get as many great reels here as you can and don't worry about the food and drinks...

Hey John,
All it takes is bottled water for me. I kicked the Ensure habit about a year and a half ago. I did live off it for about 5 months. Eight cans a day thru a "J" tube. What a way to get your 2000 calories eh? More expencive than steak and I couldn't even taste it!
Are you gonna be there?

Mother's Day

Yes, I'll have some serious making up to do when I get back home the next Monday! I did try to head it off with..."Hey, this year why don't we fly to Texas and, while I fish, look at some old reels, take in a few seminars,..." ...I guess that just didn't go over quite as well as I thought. But, bless her heart, I got "The Pass" so I'm on my way!

any count on number of ORCAns heading to Texas?

Post by Richard Lodge »

Tom: thanks for the great directions from the airports elsewhere on the board. And whoever noted that the county is dry, except for beer, knows what fuels collectors (at least part of the fuel). Glad to hear there is beer and I DO plan to enjoy the local favorites, but I'm hoping the locals don't only favor Lone Star. There HAS to be something else, right? We have Sam Adams up heah. Does Texas have a Sam Houston Beer?
Any count on how many club members are planning to attend the convention? This will be my first and I'm looking forward to meeting everybody!
