How do the Shakespeare baitcasting reels differ from 1980?

Post by RpR »

Howdy, I found this site while looking for old fishing reel info on the web that seems to be gone compared to what i thought I saw about ten years ago.
Most of it now is just sites that send you to Ebay and the others have minimal information.
So you gentlemen are a welcome find. 8)

Back when I used to go fishing and catch fish, the seventies into the eighties, I was fascinated by the Shakespeare Bicentennial model but never got one.

Now I see that Shakespeare went beyond that model to the President/ II models.

I would like to get one just because they exist but I would like to know what are the differences from the 1970 model on up and when did they stop making them.

I have too many reels already, I looked at them some time back and do not even know where half came from but I am going to take the whole lot and send it to the best reel repair person I can find and make sure that if I go fishing again they all work, well.

I have a big Shakespeare spincasting reel, the copper colored on that holds a lot of line that I did the most fishing with before I started using spinning reels.

I pulled it out and was going to use it and found out that time had not done it well.
I also have a Abu Garcia 5500, and Daiwa Millionaire of which the Daiwa needs fixing also.
Beyond that I have snag of spinning reels and a Penn bait casting reel , that needs work which I got at a antique shop a couple of years ago, with a huge Musky rod for 25 bucks.

Of the vintage bait casting reels, sixties to eighties, which ones with vintage names Shakespeare, Heddon, etc. came closest to Abu quality and durability?
Which were the last made in the USA?

The first reel I used, for years, was an old Pflueger baitcasting reel, so I learned quickly how to use thumb control to prevent snags.
Thank you for your time.

Great to have you here! It sounds like you have an amazing collection and a lot of good fishing memories. The Shakespeare President and President II reels were a step up from the Bicentennial model with improved parts and smoother performance, and they kept making them into the late 1980s. Many anglers think these reels, along with some models from Heddon and Pflueger, were closest to Abu in terms of quality and durability. The last USA-made reels from these brands were mostly in the early to mid-80s before production started moving overseas. Getting all your fishing reels cleaned up sounds like a great plan, and it will be nice to have them ready if you decide to hit the water again.

Good answers, worth the wait. A good debate no matter what the decade.

Recognizing our OP will probably never see this, I'll chime in for general interest.

The Japanese are extremely fond of Heddon MkIV - a post-'72 (patent rights limit) Ambassadeur clone.

This is $275 asking price on a used, boxed EX reel.

The beauty of old Ambassadeur, though, the Japanese are still making upgrade and tuning parts for them, and maintain a steady market for Svangsta reels and L/E reels.
