Jewels or Shell applied ?

Post by Richieoh »

I don't know about this but someone must have decorated reels with semi precious stones or at least mother of pearl? I've seen pictures of a beautiful marbling paint job on a late model reel and have seen other custom paint jobs but never in a historical context. Or should that be hysterical ?

I have seen polished, or gold plated, presentation reels. I own a couple. But I don't think I have ever seen one inlaid with mother of pearl, or jewels. At least not actual fishing reels. I have seen some reels that were made for jewelry that were.

I have seen a few reels that were heavily engraved, with gold inlay, similar to what was done with guns by the gun maker's engraving departments.

I've seen a couple of rods with mother of pearl inlay, and other decorative touches.

Donna Tonneli has a beautiful set of rods, bobbers, and rod cases, that were done by a prisoner. They have wonderful folk art decoration, including mother of pearl inlay.

some of the marbelized sideplates like on a Leonard or Cozzone, and even some latter Shakespeare reels certainly can have a pearescent look to it.
