Beryllium toxicity

Post by Steve »

Ron Mc's warning from an earlier thread on the topic of beryllium-copper alloys in rods and reels:
Don't ingest any beryllium - it's highly toxic at the microgram level.
The May 2 issue of Business Week has an article on beryllium toxicity and OSHA's failure to monitor it not only among its own inspectors, but among users in general. Scary. The important message for collectors is that machining these alloys can be very dangerous. If anyone needs to see the article, send your email address. Posting it would be a no-no.

:( :?  :?:  :type: Steve, after reading the email, and that shakespere reels used that allful metal as well as pfluger, I belive you should post this imfo, many thousands with that metal in the drag washers are still around and in collections and being used! I live within 2&1/2 miles south east of a Brush Wellman plant, they are off Baumhart road just South of Fords Econoline plant, and with the prevailing winds coming from the north west to South east , and over 35000 people are in that path, including my faimly! The way I find the artical any of the dust from machining operations will most likly cause injury? My only question is( does this metal oxidize? as those metal drag washers are multi colored, does it sluf off? I have had over 32 + years exposure to this stuff and anyone doing work on the bigger Shakespere troling reels and pflugers like the rockets have been exposed! I presume having a faimly Dr. order a metal test would be a way to see if one is carring that stuff in the lungs? Just one more thing there is no cure for? keep us advised! Col. M. No sweat, Milt, neither Brush Wellman nor your government sees any problem:

:( :x    :!: :?:  :type: Steve, this company has told exceptional lies! They have Beriliumn in the lorain plant at this time! As for mike dewine we have worked on a lot of issues and this is one of them, also sherod brown a ohio congresman and I will be having a serious meeting next month on three issues, 1 the fact that Davis bessie nucular plant is still wide open and anyone can drive onto it no gates are closed, same for Camp Perry and Toledo Edison, next issue is the FET tax on Sport fishing gear, as US mfgs must pay 10% fet tax on first point of sale while North American free trade Act does not charge tax on off shore products, We as manufactors in the US have laid off our people While Wall Mart etc thrive! also the safty of our Great Lakes from posible sabatoge! I will make it a solid point to cover this beryllium issue is totaly exposed! as No gaurds are around that Brush Wellman Plant in LORAIN OHIO! I know that this maynot be the place to air these problems however as most all of us reel colectors do FISH in public waters, we must bring this to National attention! I will after our meeting advise all of you as to the outcome! I will not take a maybee or sluf off on a very serious issue , Most of you know that I will not back down and allow our great USA to be damaged when the problem can and needs to be remidied! Steve, we, all of us in ORCA owe you a great deal of thanks for bringing the problem to our attention, You are to be commended for your honesty! Your angered Ohio Conection Col. m. Thank Ron Mc. Although I knew beryllium was toxic, it didn't occur to me that folks might be machining the alloy at home until that article woke me (and other folks, I hope) up.
