Big Hoss Looking for Swedish Reels
Big Hoss Looking for Swedish Reels
Hi Alastair - I am a green horn (new member) to the organization so bear with me if my replies are slow, delivered in unusual manners etc...Lol.
I have just begun my vintage collection of Swedish reels mainly Abu. I collect casting reels only at this time. All I have is a Heddon marked heritage 30. There is no numbers as far as I can tell. Just the made in Sweden on foot.
My Abu Record collection is a 1300, 1500 C, 1600 C. I also have all the 2000 series Ambassaduers except for the 2500. And a few 5000 series Ambassaduers.
I cant wait to find and own several of the beautiful Sweden gems of Radius, Nordic, Arjon, River, Rainbow, Victory and others.
I am currently searching for the models listed below but not limited to. Will be interested in any Swedish reels.
Arjon Champion (180)
Arjon Fighter (195)
Malte Blohms Fabriks (River) - Expert 500 or 600
River Royal
River Favorite
Rainbow 888, 777, 555, 88, 333
Victory A!, B2, C3, D4
Victory A Series (Any of the "A" Series)
Victory Heritage Series - 30, 35, 40, 45
I am not on reel talk very often so bear with me if it takes some time to respond back. Thanks.

Re: Big Hoss looking for Swedish reels
Hi Shawn - nice to come across a new collector - I started out that way - one accidental find in the bottom of a box at a local auction rooms - Nordic Topper - then it just grew as my interests grew. I stick to Swedish pre 1980.
With the 1750/2000 Ambassadeur series there are a number of variants available - this is mostly stickers versus script logo - I can send pictures if you would like them. Early record 2000 is a different matter again and harder to find. I would also suggest you buy, if you haven't got them already, "Vintage Fishing Reels of Sweden" Written by Daniel Skupien and also Simon Shimomura's three books on Ambassadeurs. Fred Ribb and Wayne Real also have very useful web sites - you may already have come across these. Finally, if you are seriously hunting Swedish reels, joining Tradera Auction site in Sweden is useful for buying and getting the values sorted out. A mint boxed River expert is to be listed by Jonas Olsson - I already have it so turned it down. It could be listed by now.
Rainbows - expensive and hard to find. Nordic is getting harder to find although bottom end ones do come up from time to time.
Nice Arjon Fighter listed on Tradera now.
Don't hesitate to message me if I can help. Regards, Alastair

Re: Big Hoss Looking for Swedish Reels
Hi Shawn - how goes the collecting of Swedish reels. I recently heard from a Swedish collector that only 4-6 Victory Heritage 45s are known to exist. I would love to get one to complete my Heritage sets. I have the others.
There have been several very nice Victory A series reels listed lately on Tradera so keep your eyes open there. I have just had a nice Victory D4 of a version I didn't have arrive to join its mate in my cabinet. Wuld you like me to let you know if I see anything that could be of interest. A quick word of warning if buying int the US. Ebay seller using the name cattlegrd (name seems to be Lige Litton) is building and selling rebuilt reels that are not genuine. I have one of them, a Red 5500 Ambassadeur which is composed of mainly 5500C parts. Teach me not to ensure authenticity before buying - anyway, be warned and pass the warning along. Cheers

Re: Big Hoss Looking for Swedish Reels
Hi Alastair,
Collecting is going wonderful....As of Saturday, December 12th I am waiting for my River Expert 500 to arrive. Thanks for the heads up on the eBay scammer...I will keep my eyes peeled. I have searched in vain for victory reels marked with victory like the A-series and others. Those are some toughies. I own two now of the Heddon heritage series... a 30 and a 45. I tried to get on tradera last week and was having some difficulties. Lol most likely it was the operator (me that is) not being able to outwit these darn smart machines...lmao.
I have also noticed that the prices have sky rocketed here lately on the excellent, mint or complete sets of reels. Reels are kinda like classic and antique cars, the market rides a roller coaster.
I don't remember since last we talked...I have added several more reels to my collection. A near mint 1976 Abu Garcia 2500 small Ambassadeur which completes my small Ambassadeur set with the exception of countless variations. An Abu Record 1500C I believe to be from the 50's maybe 60's...haven't' done any research on it yet. The Heddon heritage 45 I mentioned earlier (not bad condition other than one knob missing). And also the Malte Blohm Frabrik River Expert 500. I am so excited!!!
I am uploading a photo of my collection...not all reels can be seen in photo. Some are still in case or box. Some are on fishing rods (yes I fish with my collection). Let me know if photo didn't go through.
Keep me posted and send pics...I will try to do the same...Be safe, share a smile and keep it "Reel".

Hi Shawn - I wanted to send a few pictures for you - I went and took some pictures of my Victory reels which I thought could be of interest to you. I will send a personal message so that you can contact me off site - easier to send pics that way. Alastair

Re: Big Hoss Looking for Swedish Reels
Hi Alastair,
I enjoy our communications since the members in the club are the only ones that can handle my endless rant about reels...lmao my family and friends have grown old hearing about them. Thanks for the link showing the victory reel. I spotted it a few days ago and have been trying to register...Swedens Pii is holding me up at the moment. Mostly because I get off work to late in the day to be able to call them to register for a social number and then to be able to sign up for tradera. Tradera seems to be an awesome site. I have roamed around on it several times, but not till here of lately have I tried to register onto the site.
In a message I sent a couple of weeks ago...I mentioned how prices seemed to have jumped up considerably on ebay! I have also noticed though that they are not selling at those extreme prices. A few have sold but were closer to reasonable pricing than the others.
I just realized the other day when I bought an antique writers desk to work on my reels that the make shift display cabinet I set up has already ran out of space to display all of my reels...my friend confirmed it when all he could say was "wow" several times in a row!
I would love it if we could talk, text and/or email more on a personal level just for the simple fact of sending information back and forth would be easier. I am not sure how to go about getting that done. I am also interested in getting to know you better. Do you travel any or a lot?...I don't a lot mainly because of cost factors. Have you been to any of the ORCA conventions and are you thinking about going to this years convention?
Have a good day Alastair and happy holidays for you and your family.

Re: Big Hoss Looking for Swedish Reels
Hi Shawn - did you get my pm? I have no idea how these things work but I have tried. I think getting into contact via email would be a good thing for both of us. I have been collecting Swedish casting reels for some time now - nearly all are pre 1980. I don't have much interest in reels that are put out just for collectors. I like to think that nearly all of my reels have been used but not abused. My email, if you can interpret this, is hosking hyphen alas at xtra dot co dot nz Give it a try and we'll see how it goes.
Re: Big Hoss Looking for Swedish Reels
Hi Alastair,
Happy Holidays...I hope you and your family are having a "reel" good day?
I haven't received your email yet. I will message Betty and see if she can't forward one of us our personal info so that we may communicate better.
My heart lays with Abu Garcia and other Swedish reels, but I do love reels with fascinating innovations and technology before the industrial and hi tech world became main stream. I love strange and odd looking reels that stand out on their own. I have been studying Abu for a couple years now. I believe I got all the books that have been printed exclusively on Abu along with a few websites dedicated to Abu.
My love for fishing started with an Abu Garcia 5000 BCX (yes a 2007-08 model) and a couple years ago fell in love with the vintage model 5000. I find the all the Swedish reels so fascinating.
I will try to decode your email link but will have to say I am not very good at it. Again I will see if Betty will forward it for us...Cool!
