Caveat emptor!

Post by Phantom Fisher »

A number of nice reels with fake marks -- Meek, Crook, JVH and more -- were just auctioned off. Many were easy to spot, but to be sure of a few, you'd have to compare them with the real deal. I'm still not sure whether the mark on a Perez was original. These things may show up on the market any day now.

Boxborough. In fact, one listing referred to some of these reels as "questionable."

:( :x  jester USA laurie, thats one of the oldest wordings in the book, By saying quetionable etc that lets these auction houses off the hook! Untill reels and lures started to go into the 5&sometimes 6 figs. the problem wasent as great! Lets face reality, my thoughts would be in ORCA and NFLCC there may be only a very small percentage of the members that can truly identify reels and lures! Some test are 9ie the type of solder used, metals and compositions used of the period!, type of maching and compare it to then and now, a example intodays market there are tooling being sold for scrap that now rest in forgers hands or shops! I have seen Ivory handles machined out of old Ivory , stained and worn so very few can tell! Brass rods of the era used for handles are very easly made and aged! Old metal pre atomic age is now being sold for duplicating, and the list goes on! the antique gun business was the first experiance I had , and it was then I decided to go back to school and do some serious studies on metals! even hard rubber plates and repairs are easly done and not detectable! For those willing to admit they have been had then and only then will some of this stuff stop! Most of us are afraid to admit we have been STUNG! Yup I have and will admit it, it was on coins, 1916d dime and some 1877 indian penies and others! I got my money back like right now! only item I lost on was a Confederte revolver, a ADAMS, I wolud say within the next 35 years there will be more frauds on the market than originals ever made! As for Auction houses ? heck even Cristys gets took once in a while thats why they buy insurance! If any of us have of get beat, admit it and expose the seller regardles whom they are!
