ID for British trotting reel trademark

Post by desertangler »

Hi there everyone,

Does anyone recognize this trademark? It was referred to as "The Jovial Angler". Pretty funny, and I couldn't resist adding it to my collection. It is a nice quality reel of this type.

Cheers,

George

According to an old online auction listing this belongs to Modern Arms Co (aka Marco), (Kent) UK mid 20th century. I was not able to find it in the trademark records and there is not much online about the company.

Modern Arms Company Limited, Marco, started in South London prior to WWII. Their main focus was on rod manufacturing, though, in Bromley. It is thought that they had reel makers, most likely from Redditch, manufacture reels with their logo imprinted. One reel similar to yours with the same "Jovial Angler" is the Pixie Modernite, which also says "British Made". Another similar reel was sold with the PDQ, Pegley Davies, insignia.
