Octopus Fishing Rod

Post by Mike Franzen »

This is one of 4 English rods I found today in an antique shop. Came in a neat button down bag. Do you know anything about these? Best, Mike

Mike,
Lots of bedtime reading info out there if you search only Edgar Sealey Sons Ltd, more if you add History.

From the limited view of the handle and reel seat it looks like what the Brits call a "Coarse Fishing Rod". They generally used fixed spool reels, i.e. open face spin reels, with that type of reel seat. You can slide it up or down on the grip to get the best balance possible.

A couple of possible UK reels might be an Ambidex, Del Matic or Duco on the cheap side, or if you want to go a little more high dollar this would be a great fit: http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-SPORTEX-55 ... Swve5XNjr2

You're correct about the sliding reel seat. It does slide on the cork butt which is probably 24" long. The guides have very tiny eyes for the line to pass through. Any idea on value?

Not much interest for these in this country, I'm afraid. I'd guess $50-100.
