A few finds today

Post by Paul M »

I met some collector friends who had tables at a nostalgia show today. I came home with 3 reels (plus a bunch of baits). In particular, one reel combo is very interesting. It is a South Bend 750 Perfectoreno level wind reel that was apparently distributed by Canada Needle and Fishing Tackle Co. Toronto. I have never seen that label on a reel box before. Neat addition to my Canadian marked collection, along with another Inglis True Blue in an economy box that I have not seen before. I also picked up a nice old brass winch that may have an ivory grasp. (Need to clean it and check under UV lamp to verify.)

Nice haul, Paul. That brass reel is interesting, with the curved handle. I'll be interested to learn what you find out from your analysis of the grasp material.

Richard:

The grasp material used on this reel is definitely ivory but the patina is so heavy that it does not shine brightly under UV when compared to other ivory grasps (even after cleaning it with dish soap solution). So I also used the hot needle test and it did not make any smell or mark which is the characteristic of ivory.

The screws are iron and their heads are fragile and falling apart so I decided to only soak in mineral spirits, wipe and put it on the shelf. My conclusion is that this is an ancient reel with an ivory grasp. There are no maker's marks. The clues as to maker would be the age, style, curved handle and the use of 4 iron rivets to hold the foot, but I don't know who it might be.

Pics of this grasp compared to other reels with ivory grasps under regular light and then black light:

The 4 reels in the pic [L-R]: (a) Meek & Milam, (b) Ustonson, (c) subject reel, (d)unmarked clamp winch- probably Haywood
