Page 153 of Majors Salt Water Fishing Tackle states in 1876 Ernest Holzman had made a cast of 258 feet and was "his first exhibition of tournament casting" so........from what's been posted/written predates at least 30 years from his patent on his reel/reels. I'm sure his reels were all of his own design with floating spools, free spools and lite weight hard rubber spools. He didn't just walk into the event unprepared. I'm sure he'd been tweaking for sometime before that. Tight lines, Nick in NY
