Help ID-ing old reel - South Bend?
Help ID-ing old reel - South Bend?
Hi! I recently purchased a bunch of vintage reels and am working on cleaning them up for use or resale. While I am familiar with a lot of gear, I am relatively new to the vintage scene. I have found schematics for some and info for a few that I wasn't familiar with. There is one that is missing the model sticker, and I have no way to ID it or get much of any information about the model or the year it was made. I am attaching some pics but the only marking on it is under the head, that it was designed and made in the USA by the Gladding Group - Japan. I assume it's an old South Bend, but could not find anything like it online. The handle is very Mitchell-like, but the body looks like it could be a South Bend. There is a marking on the foot (pictured) that has a lowercase 'b' inside a star that I can't place either. The handle could be a replacement that does not belong but I have no idea. I know it's not worth much, but any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

There are no urls for pics in your mesage, so i am guessing that you did not use the "upload all" button after you chose you pics
>upload image>select pics> choose> upload all>select url for "regular". And post
>upload image>select pics> choose> upload all>select url for "regular". And post

It's a 900 series South Bend Classic with an incorrect early Mitchell spring loaded handle. It's a little tough to tell from the photos but more than likely a 925 UL, but it could also be a 930 Lite. The 900 series had the push button spool (except the 960), gray A/R lever, 2 side plate screws and the circled/starred "b" on the bottom of the foot. Here's some examples with medalions:
925 UL
930 Lite
935 Medium
960 Heavy/Salt Water (Has the raised finger support on the foot)

Excellent! Thank you very much for the info. The handle was really throwing me off, I knew it wasn't right!

This blows me away as I just purchased an almost identical reel at a flea market this past weekend. It is a South Bend Classic 935 as pictured above thanks to Midway Tommy D, so, cool find spadej1 !
