Small (thin) cheneille/wire for spinning reel spools

Post by waterone »

I have at least for old reels, that have the the chenille in the groove.

Although some think that a pipe cleaner will work, at least common pipe cleaners are too large in diameter, both the overall and wire diameters won't fit into the grooves of my small reel spools.

So does anyone know any source for these items?

BTW, the chenille used in flytying won't hold, I've tried old non-synthetic and newer synthetic, both without the wire, and it doesn't work. IMO, or at least for me, the wire is essential.

I've found that 3mm stems work well most of the time, except maybe on the really small spools. I've had good success with fly tying chenille but it can't be pulled too tight and the knot needs a drop or 2 of glue inside the spool rim to stay tied. I've also had very good success unraveling regular yarn to the appropriate diameter. I also use a little glue on those knots to help keep them tied.

Seems like I read the same basic information, on this board I believe, but on my Orvis 50, Alcedro Microns, and Cargem Mignon, it seems it needs wire to to support the chenille.

It's really annoying, as I have been diligent enough over the years to avoid loose loops, then all of a sudden BAM, one appears and seems to travel on it's own accord to the underside of the spool. Almost enough to make me want to revert to Daiwa SS700's. But they tend to be heavier and not so appropriate for a very light UL spinning.

Son't get me wrong, I love my SS700's and their skirted spools, great for UL saltwater, big lake fishing, but I really like my Orvis 50A's. So If you can keep them working on the "first team" i will try to do so.

Try the yarn method. I've used it numerous times on Microns & Mignons and it works well. The yarn can be pulled tighter than fly chenille.

If you are getting loops it is more than likely from line twist or line memory. To limit line twist use a ball swivel or let out nearly all of your line without a lure or weight and then reel it it. The line will untwist itself. To get rid of memory loops tie it to something solid, walk off a bunch of line, 50/60 yards, and then stretch the mono to near breaking. You will be amazed at how much you can stretch it and how kink/loop less it will be when you are done.
I use non-skirted spools all the time and never have a problem with line getting under the spool.

I may able to help you; Airex used fuzzy monel wire on their reel spools. This is the very thin type and I have it in black and a dark green. It will help to know the diameter of your spools and how many pieces you will need. I will be out of town today through mid Sunday.
