Shakespeare President Question

Post by Jim Nedela »

Found a new in the box President reel, oiler, papers, arbor, and a screwdriver. My question is the screwdriver a Shakespeare product, or just put in the box by a previous owner? There are no markings on it, but the guy swears he got the screwdriver in the box when purchased new. Here is a lnk to a pic of it, thanks, Jim.

A close up of the screwdriver...

Post by Jim Nedela »

and thanks, Col., I will get a envelope out tomorrow. Hope this turns out to be the right one for the reel. The tip of the screw driver is removable and has a "blade" on both ends, different sizes. Jim.

Jim & Milt,
I don't believe that is the correct screwdriver. It looks more like a Jewelers or Eyeglasses screwdriver. The correct one should be one of the ones circled in red.

Image
Of the flat metal ones, the first one (on the left) is very early, pre 1916. The second one was furnished in spincast reels and the third was used from around 1923 to maybe the war. Your's is circled. The last one was in boxes of much later and bigger reels.
As for the wooden handles, Those were furnished with the upper end reels from maybe 1932 till around 1958. They could also be purchased from the catalogue as an additional item. Jim Madden have discussed the unmarked blond handle ones which he has found in South Bend boxes but they also have appeared in Shakespeare boxes too. Most of the dark brown handle ones are marked "Shakespeare" on the sleeve that holds the driver blade.
That's my opinion. LOL! I would also like to see what Milt is talking about. I have never seen "Blue Print" that Milt has mentioned.

Harvey, you're not going to believe this, but I found this in a President box, and it's my favorite screwdriver.

HOLY-MOLY! I stand corrected! Never seen one of those before. (Why didn't you show me that before I made a fool of myself?) That is just the 537,183,084th. mistake I have made this year! Now, for my final statement and I will SHUT UP, what is the model number on the reel Jim?
Thanks for the picture. It is in my files!

Jim: I have that exact same screwdriver...can't recal for sure where it came from, but suspect it was in one the old tackle boxes I've picked up in the last few years...likely not a shakes box, but certainly from a box with shakes parts.

I picked up the same screwdriver with the two tips and other tools in a box of reel parts I picked up last year. It was mostly Shakespeare parts.

Harv - It was the reel that Jim N. pictured, but I don't remember the box. I sold the reel and box and kept the tool. The rubber top fits in the palm and stays home while you apply pressure and turn the shaft. It's very comfortable and fits the SP and SB screws perfectly. I wish I had a backup. As for the mistake, misery loves company. Every time I think I've got an area covered, something new comes along (Like that Winchester made South Bend fly reel). I held back because I figured you'd just come on and show 15 variations of the thing. I kind of enjoyed that!  John, you got an extra one for Harvey?

well, shoot...I like it too! Really works nicely, although the top typically unscrews as you turn the driver with the top in your palm...sigh...should go to a Shakesman, clearly...Harvey...it's yours if you want it!

:) 8) :?:  jester yay-banana cool-thumb USA Ok harvy that pack of drawings is on its way! I even made them on the color copier so they look like my originals, once you see them hahah you will know I was very close to get original blue prints! I got there before you did ha ha ha ho! harvy I offered you the use of my liabray if you came to the (RAT HOLE) so you could do research, the offer is still open to you! Now the thought is! hoy will start to make repro tools when the blue prints get out? Ok I got work to do, cannot go site seeing all day like some people I wont mention, now go rearange your tools, and when are you going to learn how to use them? One thought to think about, once you see the knob for the screwdriver, well check it against a handle knob, its the same size and made of wood! I have one but must confess that I didn't know it was Shakespeare. My initial thought was in agreement with Harvey. I'm 95% certain I didn't get this screw driver out of a Shakespeare box (but maybe I did?). The underside of the wooden knob is marked "Made in U.S.A". But that is only marking I find.

I assume that none of the screw drivers previously mentioned are actually marked "Shakespeare". Naturally, not saying they didn't come with the reel Jim mentions. Just not marked. Is that right?

Mine is unmarked. It is one of the best screwdivers I found so far. I use it just about every day.

Mine is also marked "Made In USA", but that's all, no other marks. The disk on the end seems to be hard rubber or plastic. It has a chip out of the edge, looks like hard rubber, Jim.
