Nice and early

Post by Paul M »

I went on a tackle pick today but the best "find" was in the mail when I got back home. This "winch" is nice and early. The handle has an unreal shape and it has an ivory grasp too :)

(The foot is a crude old replacement but I don't care).

Thanks, John!

I saw a similar handle on a reel pictured in the thick Turner book. The example was made by Dawson in London circa 1861-67.

That's a great find, Paul. The handle is quite ornate. Should clean up to be a beauty!

Thanks, Richard! This reel looks like nickel plated brass or maybe a heavy silver wash on brass. I do need to open it to see why it only winds in one direction. It is a multiplier. The grasp glows bright white under UV lamp. Getting it for a decent price was an added bonus. Here is the backplate view:

There has been some additional creativity within... perhaps the world's first "wishbone" clicker spring assembly.

I doubt the craftsman  was a certified solder tech.

Thanks, Tommy. The spring thingy and solder were very delicate as was the very thin nickel plating, so I cleaned the reel very lightly and avoided touching the custom internal work. The unintentional anti-reverse feature will remain. The extreme curvature of the handle arm provides far less torque in one direction than the other, explaining why any resistance in the floating clicker finger stops it from working.

The handle and grasp on this reel reminds me of the early Snyder reels. This has become one of my favourite old reels.
