Sportcast

Post by Willis Logan »

You know there is a question on my mind? Maybe the information is on this board? What is the history of the Shakespeare Sportcast. All the models---the time frames, the different production models and materials that they were made of.. These were the reels that most of the professional casters used in the golden days of tournament casting.

Willis,
That's a ton of information you're requesting. The first Sportcast , the No.1973, was introduced in 1938. The No.1973A was still being offered in the 1971 catalog (and perhaps even later). In those 34+ years there were numerous different models and versions of the narrow spool Sportcast that came and went.

Wow! be careful what you ask for. In the early days of tackle collection-----we were searching for information. Today there is more information than we can consume.

Go down about half a page and I think you can see one of each produced. If I am wrong, I need to get back into a buying mode.

Impressive--- Wow and wow. Wayne this is just too cool. Future collectors will be very thankful for what you have put together. Shakespeare reels--there history, their quality, and their longevity. Shakespeare's long longevity is very impressive, and the sportcast reel is a good example.

I'll bet that between the several hard-core Shakespeare collectors/researchers we have here and the rest of the ORCA membership, we could get a darn good start on a fairly comprehensive Shakespeare website, similar to ORCA's Bronson, Ocean City & Reel Research sites. It would be a massive undertaking, to be sure.

Mark, trouble with Shakes is that the world is so big, no one dares to take it on! I would think a best place to start would just be to add to the Shakespeare section of the Fishing Reel Research site we have going. Added in bite-sized hunks, a lot could get done.

If anyone has Inglis Shakespeare reels they want to get rid of to purify their collection, please let me know! :D
