Spinning reel spool unknown? Help!
Spinning reel spool unknown? Help!
Does anyone recognize this brand? I have about 20 of them in 3 different sizes. They are new old stock and came from the Martin reel plant in Mohawk, New York. I do not think that Martin produced spinners with their own brand (although I do have one that says Martin, made in France). I believe they probably produced these for another company but I can not figure out who. Any help and/or correction would be appreciated. Also, if anyone would like one or all, let's talk.

That spool goes to a Japanese made Martin similar to this 3930. You can tell it's Japanese by the combo straight/phillips screw heads. Try google searching vintage Martin to see if you can find some other skirted spool Japanese made examples. There's not much out there and I'm not real versed on a lot of the millions of Japanese made reels.
The Made in France spool would be for either a Bretton made Martin reel, 400, 800, 902, 904 or 905, or a Luxor made Sport-O-Matic 120 (light size), 130 or 140 (both large).

And once again,,, Thanks a million! I knew someone out there would know the answer. I have searched and searched but without knowing any name, it was like "spitting in the wind". The made in France is a complete reel and yes, you are correct, it is a Bretton. Kind of a nice reel actually, just not my area of collecting.

I have a Luxor spinning reel rebranded as Martin but aside from the side plate that says Martin it's a Luxor. No idea and I've never seen your spool. Compac maybe?
you can tune a piano, but you can't tuna fish.

Here's a Martin 3920. The 3920 spool holds 185 yards of 8# line so the spool you have pictured is for a larger reel.
It's for sale here.

Wow, now that is in nice condition! The spools I have appear to be identical to this one. I guess it is safe to say that these reels came in at least 3 sizes. Thanks for the post Tom!
