Hello folks,
I have acquired a Coxe 25 Coronet from ebay. While cleaning it, I found a broken circlip/spring around the shaft of the largest gear's axle. The clip is a narrow (perhaps one-eighth inch width) strip of brass that was formerly formed into a 'O' shape with a small 'V' shape that appears to have been to provide some ability to expand the circumference of the 'O' so it could be made to fit over the gear's shaft.
The circlip/spring that I found in my reel appears to be broken. Does anyone know what this piece is called? Do you know a source for replacements?
Also, which portion of the gear's shaft is that circlip/spring supposed to be? There is a smaller diameter portion of the shaft and then a greater diameter portion of the shaft closest to the surface of the gear. This portion appears to have a groove in it but it is not obvious that the circlip/spring is intended to reside inside that groove.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks!
Kevin

Re: Source for replacement circlip on Coxe 25 Coronet?
I have repaired dozens of Coxe 25's both pre-1951 German Silver models and aluminum framed Coronets. I have never seen the Coronet "clip" you are talking about broken. I can help you with a replacement. Let me know who and where you are and I will send you the part Usually the wire clip found on all the earlier 25's (which the flat metal band clip replaced on the Coronets) is badly damaged on about 50% of the 25's that pass through my hands. The wire clips are very hard to find and I have had great success fabricating ones that work as well or better than the original from the wire from ball point pen springs. I fish almost exclusively with the earlier 25N's and these fabricated clips work great and I have never had one wear out. It is important in both reels that the clips be kept well lubricated. It spins metal on metal with each turn of the reel handle when retrieving. As you have discerned, it's only function is to provide just enough friction to cause the free-spool mechanism to re-engage when the retrieve is started. It is very important when the clip is installed on the Coronet that it be put in the correct direction as it is designed to cinch down tight when rotated in one direction and to open slightly and rotate freely in the other direction. This allows the Coronet to be cast in free-spool mode without actually backing up the handle (which is not the case in the earlier design). It is possible that someone placed the clip on backward in the past and broke the clip when forcing the handle forward on the retrieve. When you mount the clip you will notice that spins easily in one direction and is very hard the spin in the other direction. The clip will fit perfectly in the groove in the metal you mention, the small knob that sticks out on the clip must be fitted into the notch provided for it in the face plate which keeps the clip from rotating when the shaft on which it is mounted turns during the retrieve. I hope this helps.
I love to get old reels, work on them until they run as smooth as silk and the take them fishing using pre-1960 plugs, mostly surface fishing for Largemouths after dark.

Thank you, Bill. I just sent you an email regarding your kind offer of a replacement clip.

Re: Source for replacement circlip on Coxe 25 Coronet?
Kevin I will do my best to ship you the parts on Monday. There is no charge for the parts after I mail them I will let you know the cost of mailing and the padded envelope needed to ship them as I know from sad experience that these items will not pass through the mail sorting machines in a flat envelope. The part, by the way, is called by Bronson the "pawl spring". Just make sure you put it in so that it causes the handle to be more difficult to turn backward than in the direction one turns it to retrieve. This correction if needed is simply a matter of flipping the spring over. There should be a spare levelwind pawl in the aluminum compartment found on the inside of the faceplate. I will, however, per your request, include an extra pawl in the package.
