Montague Levelwind

Post by Brian F. »

I was just curious but wondered if anyone else has one of these. I got it a while back because it's a design of Montague generic reel that I really like - GS/HR. I know there are tons of similarly designed models but I thought this one was rather unusual because it had a levelwind. Looking at it in the sunlight, I just realized that it's labeled "Tomahawk". Would like to see other Montagues if anyone else has one.

True Temper about 35 years later used that same Patern, tail plate bearing cap looks OCEAN CITY , handle looks more like early true temper! My date guess? arond 1930 thru 1941! Brian I could be way off on the date! Nice reel! clean it and LUBE IT! and fresh water fish it! Your Ohio conection at 89 degrees on Lake Erie Col. M. Lorens akak SWIM JIG

Brian: I've had a few of those over the years. The level wind style is well illustrated in the 1928 Montague Catalog from the ORCA Library. I believe that this hard rubber version predates 1928, but I am not aware of any other catalogs from the 1920s. We sure could use some teens and 20's Montague catalogs.

Tomahawk kind of describes my casting technique

Post by Brian F. »

Thanks for the information and comments everybody. I brought it with me to the National to cast with but I ended up being loyal to my Pflueger Supreme (see the subject title above). Looks like I'll have to get those Montague catalogs!

With a name like Tomahawk, I'm still waiting for someone to tell me it was a promo item given out on "reel nite" by the Boston Braves or Cleveland Indians (however politically incorrect as we know it today).
