A "reel" surprise...

Post by WeeKilt »

Ethan and I didn't go to the lakehouse this weekend. There were just too many honey-dos around the house and my wife, who has thus far been exceptionally tolerant for a fishing widow this winter, was fairly adamant about doing some spring cleaning. While I'm certainly a fan of saving my marriage first, fishing was still on my mind.

My brother in law, Curtis, who lives about an hour east of us in Old Fort, NC had told me about a place in Old Fort called "Big Boyz Wholesale Tackle". I mentioned to Ethan that an early Saturday morning jaunt down the mountain was in order before I started the spring cleaning task, which would make the day more palatable! LOL

This place is a hole in the wall, started by an owner that just loves anything to do with fishing. Mostly populated with a plethora of older freshwater reels, rods, new old stock fishing "anything" and thousands of used lures in a run down older building, there is a trove of neat older rod and reels hanging from the ceiling. I was told by an employee (the owner wasn't there) that anything on the ceiling was not for sale, so I didn't ask, although I spied several reels I'd LOVE to add to my small collection.

No website, a small out-dated Facebook presence... but they do have a phone. If you're ever in that area, stop in downtown Old Fort and check it out!

The following pictures are just a smattering of photos I snapped of things I found interesting to me.

Tight lines,
Keith

Reminds me of a sporting goods store called Ellingston's Sporting Goods, where I grew up in San Mateo, CA. This would have been from around 1956 to 1960 or so. The store had probably one of the more comprehensive antique gun collections on the walls (out of reach, of course) around the entire store, which was gigantic. On the ceiling however, much like in your photos, were antique rod and reel combos. Hundreds of them. Because I was a 10 year-old kid, the guns were what got my full attention me every time I went in there. It was hypnotizing. I barely remember even looking at the rods and reels. I can only imagine what was up there. Your photos brought back some instant memories. Thanks for posting those.

Glad it brought up a good thought and memory, Mark! Consider it repayment (although too little) for occasional OC advice! :)

Cheers,
Keith
